Burnout is becoming the new Norm

Mental health challenges especially in Singapore's workforce are no longer rare.

They're becoming extremely common.

Recent surveys show that more than 1 in 3 individuals are at mental health risk - stress, anxiety, burnout, depression - you name it. On top of that, about 67% reported that heavy workload is the key reason.

Here's the bigger issue. Many people feel unsupported when it comes to mental wellbeing. That gap between what people need and what they receive is where their company needs to step up on its measures.

If you're between 20 and 45, chances as you're juggling a lot would be high. Long working hours, career progression and performance pressure, family expectations and responsibilities, and financial commitments. This is the "peak responsibility" stage of life (especially when you hit your first quarter life crisis).

If you are an employer or part of the HR that's responsible for the wellbeing of your employees, or simply an individual who would like to know more about how a good EAP in place can make a real difference, chat me up.

Supporting mental health is not just about being compassionate. It is smart business.

Mental health at work isn't just a trend now. It's a workforce reality. It's time to tackle this.

... Read moreIn my own experience working in fast-paced environments, I've noticed a significant increase in burnout symptoms not just among myself but also colleagues. The heavy workload combined with personal responsibilities really takes a toll on mental wellbeing. One important insight is that mental health support at work isn't just a checkbox—it needs to be embedded in company culture to truly make a difference. For example, implementing a robust Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can provide confidential counseling and resources which make employees feel supported rather than stressed about seeking help. I also found that when managers acknowledge mental health openly, it reduces stigma and encourages team members to speak up. Simple initiatives like flexible hours, regular check-ins, and training on stress management can create a more sustainable work environment. Especially for professionals aged 20 to 45, who often juggle career pressures, family expectations, and financial commitments, addressing mental health proactively has been vital. It’s eye-opening how many people don’t realize that burnout is not a personal failure but a systemic issue needing thoughtful intervention. Time to take mental health seriously is more than a tagline—it’s the new workplace reality that companies in Singapore and beyond must tackle now to retain a healthy, productive workforce.
