book review of direbound 🐺📖

THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING.

5/5 ⭐️

3.5/5 🌶️

If you’re looking for something to give you that feeling you had the first time you read an SJM book or Fourth Wing, this is it. Essentially, the author combined the best elements of both worlds.

Because it’s so similar to ACOTAR and Fourth Wing, it’s a bit predictable. The red herring initial love interest, the bonds with the direwolves, the death of a beloved and innocent “protector” type. It’s easy to see some stuff coming.

The ending feels a bit rushed to me. It all happens so fast with Stark being able to get the crown so easily and Killian simply vanishing after his typical villain monologue. I understand why it ends the way it does, and I respect it, but there’s one thing I wish I could change. I don’t like how Stark’s feelings are being portrayed as solely because he’s meant to serve Meryn as queen. The man loves her and I’ll die on that hill.

This book is written so well. It’s a romance, but the romance is the subplot and not the main focus, which I love. Just like in Fourth Wing, there’s a war going on with a magical evil race and that’s what takes precedence. Meryn’s relationship with Stark will most likely develop more thoroughly in book 2, just like Rhys and Feyre in ACOTAR.

I can’t wait for book 2 to come out in July.

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, let's dive deeper into "Direbound: A Wolves of Ruin Novel" by Sable Sorensen, because there's so much more to unpack beyond my initial gushing! Like many of you searching, I was desperate to know if this book would fill that SJM or Fourth Wing-shaped hole in my heart, and let me tell you, it absolutely delivered on those vibes. First up, the burning question about Killian – is he a bad guy? Oh, absolutely. From his typical villain monologue to his actions throughout the story, he embodies that antagonist role. The original review mentioned him "simply vanishing," and honestly, it left me with so many questions about his ultimate fate. Does he truly die? Or is he setting the stage for an even more menacing return in future books? That ambiguity is part of what makes his character so intriguing, leaving you guessing about the true extent of his evil and what Meryn and Stark might face next. Many of you are also wondering about the series format. The good news is, "Direbound" is not a standalone! It's the first in what's shaping up to be an epic duology (or more, who knows?!). The ending definitely feels a bit rushed, as I mentioned, but that's precisely because it sets up a thrilling cliffhanger for book two. You'll be on the edge of your seat, waiting to see how Stark secures the crown and how Meryn's journey continues. Speaking of Stark and Meryn, one of the most frequently asked questions is, "Do Stark and Meryn kiss in Direbound?" Without giving away too much, their relationship is a slow burn, developing beneath the surface of a larger war. While the romance is a subplot, their connection is palpable, reminiscent of Rhys and Feyre's early days. Book one focuses more on building their bond and trust amidst chaos, so if you're looking for that big, passionate kiss, you might have to wait for book two – but trust me, the build-up is worth it! A detail that truly stood out to me, and which I saw highlighted in some discussions, is the amazing disability representation within the novel. It's handled with such grace and realism, adding significant depth to the characters and their struggles. This isn't just a fantasy story; it's one that thoughtfully includes diverse experiences, making the world feel richer and more relatable. For those curious about the narrative style, the book is primarily told from a first-person point of view, which really immerses you in Meryn's thoughts and experiences, making her triumphs and heartbreaks all the more impactful. And let's not forget the striking visual appeal! The book cover for "Direbound: A Wolves of Ruin Novel" itself is a masterpiece – with its sword featuring a wolf head hilt on a pink and purple background, set against a dark forest with a howling wolf silhouette. It perfectly captures the dark fantasy, wolf-centric themes of the story and makes you want to pick it up immediately. Overall, despite some predictable elements and a rapidly paced ending, the writing is insanely well done, full of good banter, compelling characters, and a magical war that keeps you hooked. If you're looking for a new fantasy obsession with strong SJM/Fourth Wing echoes, complex characters like Killian, and a romance that promises to ignite, "Direbound" is absolutely one to add to your TBR pile. I'm counting down the days until book two!
