If you get the joke at the end, we can be besties.
Nitrates in bacon and other cured beef, whether synthetic or not, can lead to cardiovascular issues. Our bodies can’t tell the difference.
I limit my intake of bacon, sausage and other cured beef - but I don’t completely go without them because, “life is about balance.”

In my experience, navigating the world of cured meats like bacon and sausages is all about making informed choices and balancing enjoyment with health. Nitrates, naturally present or added, can be problematic because they have been linked to cardiovascular issues. This is not to say you need to eliminate these foods entirely; rather, it's about understanding how often and how much you consume. When I shop, I look closely at labels, particularly for words like 'nitrate' or 'nitrite,' and sometimes opt for products labeled as 'nitrate-free' or made with natural preservatives. For example, some brands use celery powder, which naturally contains nitrates but may be perceived as a better alternative. However, our bodies metabolize nitrates similarly regardless of the source. I find it helpful to include plenty of antioxidant-rich foods in my meals, such as leafy greens and colorful vegetables. These can help mitigate some of the potential oxidative stress caused by nitrates. Additionally, limiting intake to occasional treats keeps my diet varied and enjoyable without compromising health goals. If you're like me, balancing a busy lifestyle with a commitment to health, it's useful to think of these foods as part of a broader pattern rather than focusing on single ingredients. Enjoying a bacon sandwich now and then doesn’t derail your progress if your overall diet is loaded with whole foods and nutrient-dense options. Finally, staying curious and reading reviews—like the ones I share—about new protein snacks and alternatives can be a great way to discover lower-nitrate options. Whether it's a spicy or savory snack stick, keeping choice diverse allows for maintaining a balanced and satisfying diet while being mindful of long-term cardiovascular well-being.
