Gum and candy which ones are you choosing?
The fact that not a single gum on the shelves in a major grocery store chain was free from artificial sweeteners, xylitol, or erythritol is truly mind blowing.
My salivary glands aren’t working properly, and my doctor suggested chewing gum or getting sour candies. Because all of the gums had these additives, I wasn’t happy but I bought the gum but I ended up using the sour candies more and just using them sparingly.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Our camera glitched and didn’t save the part where I spoke more on xylitol where it could put you at risk for blood clotting(prothrombotic). An eye stroke is basically a blood clot in the eye.
Do you think we need to make a change in the gum that’s on the shelves?

Choosing between gum and candy might seem simple, but it gets complicated when you consider what's inside these treats. From personal experience, after my doctor recommended chewing gum or sour candies to help with my salivary gland issues, I was shocked to discover that almost all gums available in major grocery stores contain artificial sweeteners like xylitol, erythritol, or others such as aspartame and acesulfame potassium. These aren't just harmless sugar substitutes; recent scientific studies have highlighted potential health concerns. For instance, erythritol has been linked to increased platelet reactivity and a higher risk of thrombosis (blood clots), which can lead to serious cardiovascular events. Xylitol shows similar risks, with evidence suggesting it may contribute to an increased risk of blood clotting disorders. This is concerning because a blood clot in areas like the eye can result in an eye stroke, a condition I was cautioned about by healthcare professionals. While sour candies might seem like a better alternative, their sugar content means they should be consumed sparingly to avoid blood glucose spikes and other metabolic issues. Some additives, such as isomalto-oligosaccharides, are digestible but still contribute to blood glucose responses, which is important for people monitoring their sugar levels. Navigating these options requires balancing the benefits and risks. For those who need to stimulate saliva flow or simply want a less harmful option, looking for gums and candies that avoid these artificial sweeteners is key, though they are increasingly rare in mainstream stores. It might require shopping at health food stores or online, or considering natural alternatives without these additives. Ultimately, life is about balance. Staying informed about what goes into your snacks can help you make healthier decisions while still enjoying treats responsibly. Be cautious about artificial sweeteners and consult with healthcare providers if you have concerns about risks related to blood clotting or cardiovascular health. Your choices can support better health outcomes without giving up enjoyment entirely.
