San Diego/Coronado Island

San Diego

So I recently had a long layover in San Diego, California! I had been before but never out and about like this. I had 24 hours and I was bound and determined to make the most of it.

My captain was from San Diego so he gave me some recommendations!

🌮It was a Tuesday so I had to do Taco Tuesday at Puesto’s (Mexican Street Food and Bar). They have a gorgeous menu but I went off menu to try their secret surf and turf taco! They celebrate their customers with a postcard and a free taco your next visit when you go to pay the bill.🌮

🚢I walked to the bay and enjoyed sightseeing all the ships and monuments/memorials! Lots of aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and little assault ships. There’s an aircraft carrier museum you can go explore and it has lots of cool planes onboard that you can go see! 🚢

🏝️🚲I was strongly suggested by the captain to go to Coronado Island and just spend the day there and let me tell you, what a cute fun island. Everybody was super friendly and kind. They’re used to tourists and so if you forgot anything there were lots of stores and shops with ready available items for your day. I went to a bike rental where you could get a bike with a basket for $8 for an hour and then $20 for 3 hours! It was really affordable and easy to rent. 🚲🏝️

🍦I biked around for a couple miles and ended up at the beach on the other side. Got some banana ice cream, some flowers, and just had a wonderful time taking in all the views. The island is full of floral trees and so the air smelled of gorgeous flowers 🌺

... Read moreWhen I set out for my San Diego harbor walk, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere along the Embarcadero. Strolling along the waterfront, the iconic palm trees stood tall and majestic against that perfect, brilliant blue San Diego sky, creating such a picturesque scene it truly felt like stepping into a postcard! The air was fresh with a hint of salt, and the gentle lapping of waves against the docks was incredibly soothing. I loved seeing the impressive display of historic ships and thought-provoking monuments. You can't miss the dramatic 'Unconditional Surrender' statue (often affectionately called 'The Infamous Kiss') – it’s a powerful and moving sight right by the water, perfect for a photo op. Just a stone's throw away is the towering USS Midway Museum, a full-fledged aircraft carrier that offers incredible views of the bay and downtown skyline even if you only admire it from the outside. The blend of naval history, modern cityscapes, and abundant green spaces dotted with palm trees is truly unique here, with plenty of spots to simply sit, watch the boats go by, and enjoy that quintessential San Diego ocean breeze. Walking along this stretch truly highlights why San Diego is known as a Navy town, showcasing everything from massive aircraft carriers to sleek destroyers. Taking the ferry over to Coronado Island felt like a mini-adventure itself, offering some of the most amazing panoramic views back at the San Diego skyline. The ride is short, scenic, and a fantastic way to transition from the city's hustle to the island's relaxed charm. As soon as I landed at Coronado Ferry Landing, I could feel the calm, beachy vibe take over. Renting a bike, as I did, is genuinely the best way to explore this adorable island, allowing you to discover hidden nooks, charming streets, and truly enjoy the fresh, floral-scented air. And Coronado Beach itself? Absolutely stunning, especially if you're lucky enough to visit during the glorious summer months. The sand here is famously soft, almost sparkling with mica, and the gentle waves are just perfect for a relaxing afternoon dip or a long stroll. I loved biking along the shore, with views stretching out to the Pacific and the iconic silhouette of the famous Hotel Del Coronado in the distance – its classic red-roofed turrets are an architectural marvel and a true landmark. If you're visiting in summer, the beach can definitely get busy, but there's always a spot to spread out your towel and soak up the abundant sunshine. Pack some sunscreen, a good book, and maybe even a frisbee! The air often carries the delightful scent of blooming flowers, just like my own experience, adding to the island's unique charm. You could easily spend hours here just building sandcastles, watching the surfers catch waves, or simply enjoying the warm ocean breeze. Don't forget to grab a refreshing treat from one of the local spots near the beach – an ice cream or a cool drink is perfect for a warm day. Even with limited time, focusing on these two incredible areas – the lively and historic San Diego harbor and the serene, picture-perfect beauty of Coronado Beach – gives you an unforgettable taste of what makes this region so incredibly special and worth revisiting!
