DNA+RNA structure

DNA and RNA are nucleic acids that store and transmit genetic information. DNA has a double-helix structure made of two antiparallel strands with a sugar-phosphate backbone and nitrogenous bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine). Base pairing occurs as A–T and C–G. RNA is usually single-stranded, contains ribose sugar, and uses uracil instead of thymine. RNA structures vary, forming mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA for protein synthesis

... Read moreFrom my own studies, I found that grasping the structural differences between DNA and RNA makes it much easier to understand their biological roles. DNA’s famous double-helix shape, with two antiparallel strands held together by hydrogen bonds between adenine-thymine and cytosine-guanine base pairs, not only stores genetic information but also allows reliable replication. Interestingly, Edwin Chargaff’s rules—that adenine equals thymine and cytosine equals guanine in quantity—are essential in understanding DNA composition. On the other hand, RNA is typically single-stranded and contains ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose, plus uracil replaces thymine. This single strand enables RNA to fold into complex shapes, giving rise to various forms such as messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA), which participate actively in protein synthesis. Through my coursework, I learned how the sugar-phosphate backbone orientation in DNA strands is such that one strand runs 5’ to 3’, while the other runs 3’ to 5’, a feature described as antiparallel. This polarity is crucial during replication and transcription. An interesting aspect is how hydrogen bonds facilitate DNA replication by allowing the strands to separate easily, acting like a zipper that can unzip and rezip. This is vital for cell division. Understanding the distinction between purines (double-ring structures like adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (single-ring structures like cytosine, thymine, and uracil) helped me realize why the base pairing is so specific and stable. Additionally, the role of plasmids in bacteria—which are small circular DNA molecules independent of chromosomal DNA—highlighted DNA's versatility. Plasmids can be engineered in labs by inserting genes of interest to study gene expression or produce proteins. I discovered that bacteria can share these plasmid genes with neighbors, enhancing survival traits. All of these points strengthen my appreciation for the complexity and elegance of nucleic acid structures and their critical biological functions.
