Which PCOS myth did you believe for the longest?

I didn’t even know what PCOS was a year ago before getting diagnosed 😂

So I’ve had a lot of catching up to do!! When I was first diagnosed with PCOS, I thought I had to have every symptom to even count — irregular periods, breakouts, weight issues, insulin problems, etc.

Turns out, that’s a myth. PCOS is actually diagnosed by at least 2 of 4 pillars:

- irregular periods

- high androgens (cystic jawline acne, hair growth, unwanted hair loss)

- polycystic ovaries on ultrasound

- insulin resistance/metabolic issues

Doctors don’t tell you that!! It’s so important to find a doctor that is knowledgeable about PCOS and willing to actually diagnose you.

I’m so grateful I’ve been able to get diagnosed and start reducing my symptoms of PCOS 🫶🏻

Which myth did you believe for the longest?🥹

2025/12/16 Edited to

... Read moreMany people misunderstand what it truly means to have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). A widespread myth is that you have to experience every possible symptom—like irregular periods, acne, weight gain, or insulin resistance—to be diagnosed. However, PCOS is actually identified when at least two out of four key criteria are present: irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgen levels (which can cause cystic jawline acne, excess hair growth, or hair loss), polycystic ovaries visible on ultrasound, and insulin resistance or metabolic issues. It's important to recognize that irregular periods are not 'normal' and may signal hormone imbalances consistent with PCOS. Understanding these pillars helps empower individuals to seek proper diagnosis rather than dismiss symptoms. Equally vital is finding a healthcare provider who understands PCOS well and can thoroughly evaluate symptoms rather than relying on outdated misconceptions. Moreover, while PCOS currently has no cure, lifestyle factors play a significant role in managing symptoms. Diet, exercise, adequate sleep, and blood sugar balance alongside supplements tailored to combat insulin resistance can dramatically reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life. Adopting a holistic approach supports hormone regulation and reduces complications. Navigating PCOS can feel isolating, but connecting with communities focused on PCOS awareness and support can provide encouragement and valuable insights. Sharing individual experiences debunks myths and promotes education, helping everyone better understand how PCOS manifests uniquely in each person.
