... Read moreOkay, so if you're like me and were obsessed with Freida McFadden's "The Housemaid" book, you probably rushed to watch the movie adaptation. But let me tell you, the movie makes some choices, especially around the ending and critical plot points, that left my jaw on the floor! I totally get that a movie can't be an exact replica of a book, but some of these changes felt monumental and truly altered the story's impact. First off, let's talk about the torture. In the book, Andrew's torture of Millie (and later Nina) is incredibly disturbing but often more psychological and physically demanding. Remember the hours spent holding heavy objects? That slow, agonizing process built so much tension and showed the calculated cruelty. But in the movie? They decided to go for something far more graphic and, honestly, quite grotesque. It was hard to watch, and while it definitely left an impression, it felt like a different kind of horror. This shift fundamentally changed how Andrew's eventual fate felt. Speaking of Andrew's fate, the ending is where things really diverge. In Freida McFadden's novel, Andrew's death is a drawn-out, horrifying consequence of dehydration and malnutrition in the attic. The water in the room was crucial, highlighting his slow decline and giving Millie a twisted sense of justice. It was a slow burn of revenge. The movie, however, turned it into a high-stakes, almost action-packed "tag team fight" where Nina accidentally gets involved, thinking it's Millie. While it made for a more cinematic and dramatic ending on screen, it completely changed the core essence of Millie’s calculated retribution and the psychological torment from the book. I was genuinely surprised they completely changed such a pivotal moment. Another massive omission that still baffles me is the complete absence of Enzo. If you've read the book, you know Enzo is an incredibly important character, a kind of guardian angel for both Millie and Nina. He plays a significant role in helping them, and his presence (or lack thereof) profoundly changes certain plot developments and character motivations. Not only that, but Enzo is set up to be a key character in the sequels. By cutting him out entirely, the movie loses a lot of depth and makes me wonder how they'd ever try to adapt the next books without him. It's truly a missed opportunity to build that foundation. And let’s not forget the detective. In the book, the detective investigating the case is Millie's *father*, which adds a whole layer of personal stakes and emotional complexity to the unraveling mystery. The movie, though, changes this to her *sister*. While it still creates a connection, it doesn't carry the same weight or family trauma as the father-daughter dynamic. These little things, even the addition of the dollhouse scene, though seemingly minor, ripple through the entire narrative and affect how we perceive the characters' struggles and triumphs. Honestly, after diving into both versions, I'm still processing some of these creative liberties. While the movie had a strong cast, like Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried who did a phenomenal job with what they were given, the screenplay's awkward flow and the fundamental plot changes, especially regarding the ending and the torture, were tough to reconcile with the brilliant source material. What do you guys think? Did you prefer the book or the movie ending more, and what differences surprised you the most? Let's discuss!

The Final Housemaid Book
