nickel error hunting finds die clash

My recent 2016 P US nickel find with that incredible die clash really got me thinking about all the other treasures waiting to be discovered! While my latest find was a 2016, the hunt for errors isn't limited to just one year. You might be surprised at what you can find, even on coins like a 2012 nickel, if you know what to look for. So, what are some of the common nickel errors beyond a die clash like the one I spotted on Thomas Jefferson's obverse? Die clashes, like my 'ADC-5C-2016P-01 Atypical Die Clash', occur when the dies strike each other without a planchet in between. Look for faint outlines or raised lines on the coin's surface, often crossing portraits or designs. The magnified view of Jefferson's face clearly showed the line, a truly exciting find! Another popular error is the Doubled Die. These show a duplicated image, often seen in the lettering like 'IN GOD WE TRUST' or 'LIBERTY', or on elements like Monticello on the reverse. Always keep a sharp eye out for these, especially when examining the obverse details of Jefferson. Even older coins or a 2012 nickel could hold a doubled die error! Off-center strikes are also common – where the coin isn't perfectly centered when struck. This can lead to part of the design being missing, or a blank area on one side. This type of error can happen to any year, including a 2012 nickel. Then there are planchet errors – issues with the coin blank itself before striking. This could be a 'clip' (a missing piece of the edge), or a lamination error where part of the metal peels away. When you're out there coin roll hunting, make sure you have good lighting and a magnifying glass. Carefully inspect both sides. On the obverse, check Jefferson's portrait, the date, and the motto. On the reverse, scrutinize Monticello, 'E PLURIBUS UNUM', 'FIVE CENTS', and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. Remember, small details can indicate big finds! Don't just focus on recent years; older nickels, or even something like a 2012 nickel, could hold a hidden gem waiting for you to uncover. It’s all about patience and knowing what unique characteristics to look for. Each roll of nickels is a new adventure, and you never know when you'll uncover your next amazing error coin!
