... Read moreCacti can be beautiful additions to your home, but they can also attract a variety of pests that threaten their health. Regularly checking your cacti for a signs of infestation is crucial. Common pests include mealybugs, which are small, white insects that cluster on cacti and can be controlled by rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap. Scale insects, recognized by their oval shape, suck sap from the plant and can be removed by gently wiping them off with a cloth soaked in alcohol or neem oil. Spider mites are another threat, causing stippling on leaves and creating webs; a strong spray of water can help eliminate them. Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that cluster on new growth; rinsing the plants with water or using insecticidal soap can effectively control them. Fungus gnats are dark-colored flies that can damage roots by laying eggs in moist soil. Allowing the soil to dry out between waterings and using yellow sticky traps can help catch them. Root mealybugs can weaken the plant over time. To treat them, repotting the cactus in fresh, well-draining soil along with applying a systemic insecticide may be necessary. For slender and sap-feeding thrips, insecticidal soap or neem oil treatments are recommended. Lastly, hand-picking snails and slugs off your cacti, particularly in humid environments, or applying safe baits can keep these pests at bay. By adhering to these pest management practices, you can ensure your cacti flourish and remain a delightful part of your botanical collection.
