The saddest books ever💔

I think 2024 was the year I discovered a crazy amount of sad YA books and If He Had Been With Me takes the cake.

I remember seeing this book at Barnes and Noble about 10 years ago when it first came out, and I liked the old cover. I can’t exactly remember why I never bought the book but I’m glad I waited so long to read it because I feel like as an adult I appreciate the story more.

I know when If only I had told Her first came out, there was a lot of mixed feelings from everyone about it. I spent majority of this book crying and hurting. 😭

I’m in the mood for a good cry! I need more sad book recs.

Others I recommend are All the Bright Places and A Little Life.

... Read moreIt's funny how sometimes you just crave a really good cry, isn't it? That's exactly how I've felt this year, diving deep into some truly heart-wrenching young adult novels. While the original post highlights a couple of absolute standouts, I wanted to share more about why I think books like Laura Nowlin's 'If He Had Been With Me' and 'If Only I Had Told Her' resonate so deeply, and suggest other titles that are guaranteed to make you reach for the tissues. Laura Nowlin has a way of capturing the raw emotions of teenage love, loss, and regret that just hits different. 'If He Had Been With Me' isn't just a sad story; it's an exploration of 'what ifs' and the enduring impact of first loves. The way the narrative unfolds, you just know tragedy is coming, and that anticipation makes the eventual heartbreak even more profound. Similarly, 'If Only I Had Told Her' tackles intense emotions and situations, making it another powerful read that leaves a lasting impression. Both of these books, often found prominently displayed in stores like Barnes & Noble, truly define what many consider the 'saddest book ever' in the YA genre for their sheer emotional weight. It's no wonder people seek out collector's editions or similar books to these; they're just that impactful. When you're searching for sad books for teens or the saddest YA books, you're usually looking for stories that explore complex themes with authenticity. Beyond Laura Nowlin's incredible works, there are so many other young adult novels that deliver that cathartic cry. For instance, 'All the Bright Places' by Jennifer Niven is another one I'd put right up there. It deals with mental health and finding light in dark places, but it absolutely will make you cry. Then there's 'A Little Life' by Hanya Yanagihara, which, while not strictly YA, is a profoundly sad book that leaves many readers emotionally drained – in the best way possible. If you're still on the hunt for books that make you cry for young adults, consider titles like John Green's 'The Fault in Our Stars,' a classic for a reason, exploring love and loss in the face of illness. Or Adam Silvera's 'They Both Die at the End,' which tells you the ending from the start, yet still manages to break your heart with its exploration of life, love, and fate. Another incredibly moving story is 'A Thousand Boy Kisses' by Tillie Cole, which is just as devastating as it sounds. These aren't just sad stories; they're stories that help you process emotions and connect with characters on a deep level. Finding your next tear-jerker is part of the fun for us sad book lovers! I often find myself browsing online or even just wandering the aisles of Barnes & Noble, drawn to covers or blurbs that hint at deep emotional journeys. Sometimes, the 'If Only I Had Told Her series' is a query I see, but often with these powerful standalones, the impact is so great, they don't need a series to be unforgettable. My advice? Grab a cozy blanket, a box of tissues, and prepare to feel everything these incredible authors have to offer. What's the saddest book you've ever read that you'd recommend?
