Masked vs Unmasked
Dealing with autism, you have to make the conscious decision of whether to unmask and be your true self, where you risk discrimination And isolation, or choose to be masked and keep pretending to be someone that you're not to protect yourself from being discriminated against. I prefer the unmasked version. My nervous system like is that way. #Autistic #maskingautism #autism
Living with autism often means facing the difficult choice between masking your true self or showing your authentic traits to the world. Masking, or camouflaging autistic behaviors, is a common coping mechanism used to fit into social norms and avoid stigma. However, this comes with the emotional toll of hiding one’s true identity and the stress it places on the nervous system. From my own experience, unmasking has been both liberating and challenging. While it opens the door to acceptance and deeper connections, it also exposes us to the risk of discrimination and misunderstanding. For many, masking feels safer because it acts as a protective shield in a world that often lacks autism awareness and sensitivity. Choosing to unmask means embracing vulnerability but also advocating for greater acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity. It empowers autistic individuals to live authentically without conforming to societal pressures. The journey between masking and unmasking is deeply personal and shaped by individual comfort levels and support systems. It’s important to recognize that masking can negatively impact mental health, increasing anxiety and exhaustion. On the other hand, unmasking can lead to more genuine relationships and self-acceptance, which contribute to overall well-being. Sharing experiences, like those in the #maskingautism community, helps foster support and awareness. Ultimately, whether you choose to mask or unmask, prioritizing your mental and emotional health is crucial. Advocating for environments where autistic traits are understood and respected helps reduce the need for masking altogether. Embracing authenticity, despite challenges, is a powerful step toward self-love and societal change.
