proper posture as a hair stylist/ braid stylist

As hairstylists, we spend HOURS pouring into others — creating beauty, building confidence, and standing on our feet day after day. But one thing we don’t talk about enough is PROPER POSTURE for BOTH the stylist and the client. 💆🏽‍♀️✨

Poor posture can lead to: ✔ Neck strain

✔ Upper & lower back pain

✔ Wrist and hand issues

✔ Carpal tunnel

✔ Foot and leg pain from standing for long periods

Stylists: • Keep your shoulders relaxed instead of hunched

• Bring the client closer to YOU instead of bending your body to them

• Adjust your chair/station when possible

• Stretch between clients

• Wear supportive shoes

• Protect your wrists and back — your body is your livelihood

Clients: Please help support your stylist too ❤️

• Sit all the way back in the chair

• Keep your head upright when instructed

• Avoid excessive leaning, slouching, or constantly looking down at your phone

• Try not to suddenly move while your stylist is working

• Good posture helps us braid neater, faster, and with less strain on our bodies

A healthy stylist can continue serving with excellence for years to come. Protecting our bodies matters just as much as protecting your hair. ✨

Respect the crown AND the person creating it 👑

... Read moreAs a professional hairstylist or braid stylist, maintaining proper posture throughout your workday is crucial not only for your immediate comfort but for your long-term health. From my own experience working behind the chair, I've observed that poor posture often leads to chronic issues such as neck strain, repetitive motion stress, and both upper and lower back pain — problems highlighted in the core content and visible in the common complaints among industry peers. One useful approach I found helpful is consciously setting up my workspace to reduce awkward bending and leaning. Bringing the client closer to you instead of bending forward minimizes spinal strain significantly. Adjustable chairs and workstations make a huge difference; even small height tweaks can improve posture dramatically. Also, supportive footwear cannot be overstated. Standing for hours without the right shoes intensifies foot and leg pain, which quickly affects overall stability and alignment. Taking regular breaks for stretching between clients helped me personally to ease muscle tension and avoid stiffness that builds up after prolonged periods of standing or holding hands in certain positions. Simple wrist stretches and shoulder rolls go a long way in preventing carpal tunnel symptoms and upper back tightness. Clients can also play an active role by maintaining good posture while seated—keeping the head upright and avoiding slouching ensures the stylist can work efficiently and accurately without having to adjust their own posture excessively. This partnership fosters a healthier work environment and ultimately results in cleaner, faster braiding and styling. Moreover, education about proper posture is not just a self-care matter; it protects the livelihood of beauty professionals. Our bodies are instruments of our craft, and protecting them ensures longevity in the competitive beauty industry. I encourage fellow stylists and clients alike to prioritize health as passionately as style, respecting both the crown and the person creating it.
