But after feeling sluggish even after it kicked in, I started looking into natural alternatives. That's when I stumbled upon the idea of a homemade Theraflu-style remedy, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer! It's all about getting back to basics, using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen to create a powerful, natural cold and flu fighter. Making your own natural Theraflu recipe means you control the ingredients, avoiding artificial colors, flavors, and excessive sugar. Plus, the active components like ginger and lemon are fantastic for soothing symptoms. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory and nausea-reducing properties, while lemon provides a boost of Vitamin C and helps break up congestion. This hot drink preparation truly helps ease the cold. Here’s how I make my concentrated base, which is that fantastic dark, concentrated mixture of lemon slices and other ingredients you see in my pictures, ready to be turned into a warm drink with lemon slices and ginger: Ingredients for the Concentrated Base: 2-3 organic lemons, thinly sliced 1 large knob of fresh ginger (about 3-4 inches), peeled and grated or thinly sliced 1 cup water ½ cup raw honey (adjust to taste) ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, but great for sinus clearing!) Instructions: Combine & Simmer: In a small saucepan, combine the sliced lemons, grated ginger, and 1 cup of water. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the beneficial compounds from the lemon and ginger to infuse into the water. Strain: Once simmered, remove the saucepan from the heat. Carefully strain the liquid into a clean jar or heat-proof container, pressing down on the solids (lemon and ginger) to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids. Add Honey: Let the strained liquid cool down for a few minutes until it's warm but not scalding hot. Then, stir in the raw honey until it’s fully dissolved. If using, mix in the cayenne pepper. Store: Once cooled completely, close the jar tightly and store it in your refrigerator. This concentrated mixture will last for up to 2 weeks. To Prepare Your "Homemade Theraflu" Hot Drink: When you feel a cold coming on or need some relief, simply scoop 1-2 tablespoons of your concentrated homemade Theraflu mixture into your favorite mug. Pour about 8-10 ounces of hot water over it and stir well. You'll immediately have a comforting, aromatic warm drink that tastes like Theraflu, but is packed with natural goodness. Tips for Making it Taste Even Better & Customizing: Extra Lemon: If you love a strong citrus kick, squeeze in a bit of fresh lemon juice into your hot drink. It's perfect for when you need that 'extra lemon' boost. Sweeter? While the honey adds natural sweetness, if you prefer it sweeter, you can add a bit more raw honey to your mug. I personally find honey to be a better option than refined sugar, especially when you're feeling unwell, as it also has soothing properties. Spice it Up: A tiny pinch of ground cinnamon or turmeric can be added to your hot drink for extra flavor and their own health benefits. "Theraflu Packet" Style: This concentrated base is exactly like having your own "Theraflu packet" ready to go! Just add hot water, and you're set. It's so much more satisfying knowing exactly what's in your cold remedy. Don't wait until the sniffles start! Having this homemade cold and flu remedy ready in your fridge means you can tackle symptoms as soon as they appear, getting you back to feeling your best faster and more naturally.
