Read moreHey amazing community! ✨ Building a YouTube channel, especially from scratch, is such a journey, and I wanted to share a bit more about my own experience and some things I've learned along the way. When I started, hitting 1,000 subscribers by the end of 2024 felt like a huge, almost impossible dream, but setting that goal has been incredibly motivating.
One thing I’ve realized is that it’s not just about the number; it’s about building a community who genuinely connects with what you're sharing. To make that happen, I’ve been focusing a lot on consistency and really trying to understand what my audience wants to see. It’s a learning curve, for sure!
Speaking of content, you might notice my channel covers a few different areas like beauty, lifestyle, fashion, and even medicine. I know some people say to stick to one super-niche, but for me, these are all genuine passions, and I find ways to weave them together. For example, a "Get Ready With Me" can blend beauty and lifestyle, while talking about my experiences in medicine can tie into a broader "day in my life" vlog. The key is finding your unique voice that ties everything together, so it doesn’t feel disjointed. I often ask myself, "How does this topic reflect *me*?" and that helps.
For anyone just starting their own YouTube journey, here are a few tips that have helped me:
Just Start! Don't wait for perfection. Your first videos won't be your best, and that's totally okay. Mine certainly aren't!
Engage with Your Community: Respond to comments, ask questions, and listen to feedback. It makes a huge difference.
Learn Basic Editing: You don't need fancy software to begin. There are tons of free tutorials out there to make your videos look more polished.
Promote Smartly: Share your videos on other social platforms, engage in relevant communities (like here on Lemon8!), and collaborate with other creators when you can. It's not just about saying "Subscribe to my YouTube," but showing why they should.
And for my fellow Black girl creators out there, finding your space and voice on YouTube can be incredibly empowering. It's about showing up authentically and embracing what makes you unique. There's so much room for diverse perspectives, and your story is truly valuable. Don't be afraid to embrace vulnerability; it's often where the deepest connections are made. Sometimes I'm a bit nervous to share something personal, but those are often the videos that resonate the most. It's like my channel isn't just about the topics, but about sharing a slice of my life with you all.
I truly appreciate each and every one of you who drops by, subscribes, or even just watches for a few minutes. Every bit of support fuels this passion project. What are your tips for growing a channel, or what kind of content do you love to see? Let me know!
