Book Review: Giovanni's Room
I finished this book last night and...there is so much to say.
First, the build was slow and gradual. Baldwin built the layers of themes well as he laid out Giovanni's tragic story. There is so much to say about guilt and shame. In this context it applies to homosexuality and love, but we can apply the crippling guilt and shame that David feels to many areas of our own lives. We let guilt and shame stop us from being our true selves.
While Giovanni wants love. He craves it. He lays his want and need for love at David's feet. My heart broke with him as David chose a secure life over the love they had built together. I somewhat don't know how to blame David for walking away.
Not to mention the commentary on how older gay men prey on younger ones. I dont know when or how I will be able to leave Giovanni's Room.
