Dry Tortugas National Park

Three hours to get to… about thirty minutes to walk around… and three hours to get back. We had hoped to maybe snorkel, but the day we made the journey to Dry Tortugas the weather was rough. High winds and surf muddied up the waters so visibility was very low. Still the history of the fort is interesting. There were some pretty vistas. Worth the trip to this small National Park at the end of Florida. And, hey, you launch from Key West… there’s nothing wrong with that at all…

... Read moreVisiting Dry Tortugas National Park is truly a unique experience that combines history, nature, and adventure in one remote location. The park, situated about 70 miles west of Key West, is only accessible by boat or seaplane, which makes the journey part of the excitement. While the travel time—three hours each way—may seem long, it’s well worth it for the chance to explore one of the most isolated national parks in the United States. One of the most striking features of the park is Fort Jefferson, an enormous coastal fortress with a fascinating past. The fort construction began in the mid-1800s and played a critical role in coastal defense. Walking around the fort, I was impressed by its massive brick walls and the sense of history permeating the site. It also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding turquoise waters and coral reefs. Although we hoped to snorkel, the weather conditions on our visit made the water visibility poor. However, when conditions are ideal, snorkeling at Dry Tortugas is a must-do activity. The park boasts vibrant marine life and intact coral ecosystems, offering underwater sights that rival some of the best snorkeling spots in Florida. Accessibility from Key West is a major plus. The park’s ferry and seaplane services allow visitors to relax and enjoy the scenic ride with views of the open ocean and nearby islands. Despite the lengthy travel time, the peacefulness and natural beauty of Dry Tortugas make it a rewarding day trip or overnight camping destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat off the beaten path. For anyone planning a visit, be prepared with plenty of water, sun protection, and some snacks, as amenities on the island are limited. Exploring the park’s walking trails, historical sites, and marine life creates lasting memories and offers an unforgettable escape into Florida’s coastal wilderness.
