Stop Following Pinterest If You Want a Functional

A beautiful home that frustrates you daily… isn’t good design. ✨

Pinterest homes are designed for:

- huge spaces

- colder climates

- low daily clutter

- staged photography

Whereas, Singapore HDBs are designer for:

- compact living

- humid weather

- storage needs

- daily practicality

So blindly copying Pinterest often creates homes that looks good online but feels frustrating to live in. 😣

Good design balances beauty and practicality. 😉

... Read moreFrom personal experience living in an HDB unit, I’ve found that blindly following Pinterest trends often leads to frustration rather than comfort. For example, many Pinterest layouts emphasize open shelving and minimalism, which can look stunning online but practically cause endless dust accumulation and clutter in real life—especially in humid tropical environments like Singapore. I tried incorporating dark aesthetics from popular Pinterest boards once, only to feel that my room became smaller and gloomier, contrary to my expectations. A significant lesson I learned is that storage is king in compact HDB homes. Instead of open shelves, opting for closed, streamlined cabinets helped me keep clutter out of sight and maintain a clean visual line, which in turn made the space feel more spacious and organized. Additionally, white interiors, though trendy, proved challenging with kids and pets around—they easily show marks and require constant upkeep. It’s better to select colors and materials that stand the test of daily wear and tear while still complementing your style preferences. Ultimately, a functional HDB home needs to consider tropical weather impacts, space constraints, and everyday usability alongside aesthetics. Good design doesn’t mean sacrificing practicality for beauty but achieving a harmonious balance so your home is both inviting and livable every single day.
