This book reads more like an extended newspaper article, which makes sense considering it was originally based on Nellie Bly’s investigative reporting. However, for its time, it could easily have been considered a full-length book.

As someone who works in psychiatric care, this story and the history behind it have always made me incredibly sad. People were treated so poorly simply because they behaved differently or did not fit society’s expectations. It also raises an important question: Who truly had the right to define what was considered “normal” or “sane” during that time?

Reading about the treatment, living conditions, neglect, and abuse the patients experienced was deeply upsetting. Having worked in healthcare for many years, I have also seen firsthand how quickly a facility can make a complete 180 when staff members know they are being investigated or observed.

I am grateful that Nellie Bly took such a tremendous risk to expose what was happening and advocate for psychiatric patients. Without her investigation, how many people would have ever known what the care inside the institution was truly like? Who would have spoken up and demanded change?

This is a very quick but powerful must-read. It will open your eyes to the history of psychiatric care and remind you how important patient advocacy continues to be.

... Read moreHaving worked in psychiatric care myself, I find Nellie Bly’s "Ten Days in a Mad-House" an eye-opening historical account that deeply resonates with modern mental health advocacy efforts. Witnessing the stark realities behind the walls of Bellevue Hospital on Blackwell's Island in 1887, Bly exposed the severe mistreatment of patients who were often misunderstood and stigmatized. From personal experience, I’ve seen similar challenges where patients in psychiatric facilities were sometimes marginalized due to societal expectations of 'normalcy' or 'sanity.' This investigation reminds me how crucial it is to continually question who defines these standards and to ensure patient dignity is upheld. Reading about the neglect and abuse described in Bly's report is heart-wrenching but vitally important. It not only chronicles the suffering endured but also highlights the power of fearless journalism and advocacy to drive reforms in mental healthcare. Moreover, as someone familiar with healthcare environments, I’ve observed how care quality can dramatically improve when oversight is present—just as Bly’s undercover work temporarily transformed conditions. This reinforces the role of transparency and accountability in healthcare settings. Bly’s commitment serves as an enduring inspiration for patient advocacy today. Her work reminds us that exposing harsh truths requires courage but can lead to meaningful change. For those interested in mental health history, true crime, or social justice, this quick yet compelling narrative is a must-read that emphasizes why advocacy remains essential in psychiatric care.
