Oh Lord we do not fear you like we should. We fear man and all the issues we make up ourselves. Help us follow you with the most accurate type of fear. Also humble us in that we have not even an ounce of an idea of how magnificent you really are. Amen
... Read moreWhen I first encountered the phrase 'fear of the Lord,' I admit, like many, I found it a bit perplexing. Did it mean I should walk around in constant dread or terror of an angry God? That didn't quite resonate with the loving God I was learning about. What I've come to understand on my spiritual journey is that the biblical meaning of fearing God is profoundly different from worldly fear.
It's not about a paralyzing dread, but rather a deep, worshipful awe and reverence for God's immense power, holiness, and perfect love. Think of being utterly humbled and captivated by something so magnificent and glorious that it reorients your entire perspective. This distinction between dread and awe, as I've learned, is crucial. It’s about recognizing His sovereignty and majesty, acknowledging that He is the Creator and sustainer of all things.
This kind of reverence naturally leads to a truly God-centered life. When you grasp the magnitude of who God is, your own worries and self-importance begin to diminish. You start to trust His wisdom and guidance above your own limited understanding, seeking His will in every decision and circumstance. This shift makes all the difference in how you navigate daily life, from small choices to major life paths.
Many of us ask, 'Is God fearing a good thing?' And the answer, from a biblical perspective, is a resounding yes! This isn't a fear that cripples; it's a fear that liberates. It's the beginning of wisdom, as Proverbs often teaches, and it leads to a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God. When we truly revere Him, we gain discernment, peace, and a clear moral compass. It helps us overcome the fear of man, the fear of failure, and the anxieties the world constantly throws at us because we know that God is ultimately in control and His plans are good, even when we don't understand them.
So, how do we cultivate this 'fear of the Lord' in our lives? It's a continuous journey of intentionally seeking God through His Word, prayer, and worship. It involves humbling ourselves, meditating on His attributes, and actively surrendering our will to His. Personally, embracing this understanding has brought an incredible sense of peace and clarity. It’s helped me reconcile questions of 'faith over fear' by demonstrating that a true reverence for God empowers us to face challenges with courage, knowing His love is constant and His presence is always with us. It’s about being so profoundly impressed by God that all other fears simply pale in comparison, allowing us to live a life truly centered on Him.
