Faith and Works

It's so easy to get caught up in the big theological debates, especially when it comes to 'faith and works.' I know I've spent a lot of time pondering what it truly means to have faith and how that translates into my everyday actions. My recent prayer, seeking wisdom to put others first, really stems from this deeper dive into understanding their connection. Many of us have heard the phrase 'faith alone' – a cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation, as my devotional for February 16 reminded me. It teaches that salvation comes through God's grace and love, received by faith, not by our own efforts or good deeds. But here's where it gets interesting: if our faith is truly alive, it's never really alone, is it? It naturally spills over into action. Think of it this way: if you genuinely believe in something, it changes how you live. Our 'works' then become the natural, heartfelt evidence of our inner 'faith.' They're not a checklist to earn God's favor, but rather a joyful response to the immense love and grace we've already received. It’s about a heart change leading to a life change, as my devotion highlighted. This brings me to a verse that has really resonated with me lately, tying directly into that idea of serving others: Mosiah 2:17. It says, 'And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.' Wow! For me, this scripture perfectly encapsulates the 'works' part of 'faith and works.' It's not about being 'holy' for holiness' sake, but about channeling that inner faith into outward service. My prayer to put others first isn't about being a martyr or trying to earn points; it's about seeing others through God's eyes and recognizing that by helping them, I'm actually serving Him. It's a beautiful, humbling realization. This kind of 'service' isn't always grand gestures. Often, it's in the small, daily acts of sacrificial love. It's choosing patience when I'm tired, offering a listening ear, speaking a kind word, or genuinely considering someone else's needs before my own. It’s about seeking that daily wisdom I pray for, to discern how I can genuinely reflect God's truth in my interactions. The goal isn't to be seen or praised, but to point others towards the only true Holy One. That's where the real impact of our faith and works comes alive – in showing God's love through our tangible actions. It transforms abstract belief into a living, breathing reality that blesses those around us and, in turn, deepens our own faith journey. It's a beautiful cycle of receiving grace and extending it to the world.
