[11] Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.
I've recently been pondering the profound words of Ecclesiastes, especially verse 2:11, and it really gets you thinking about all the effort we pour into our lives. The Preacher, wise King Solomon, experimented with every possible avenue for fulfillment – from accumulating vast wealth and undertaking massive building projects to indulging in pleasure and seeking deep wisdom. He had it all, as the earlier parts of chapter 2 lay out, trying to find meaning 'under the sun.' But what was his conclusion after all that relentless striving? 'Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.' Wow. It’s a sobering thought, isn't it? It directly addresses that common question: 'what does Ecclesiastes say about human effort?' Clearly, from his perspective, it often boils down to vanity if it's solely focused on earthly gains. My own experiences, especially when I get caught up in chasing external achievements, sometimes echo this feeling of emptiness. It’s like trying to catch the wind – you exert so much energy, but what do you really hold onto? The OCR text also highlights that even 'in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow' (Ecclesiastes 1:18). So, it's not just about material pursuits; even intellectual or spiritual growth can feel like a burden if our perspective is limited to 'under the sun.' The Preacher even found the 'vanity of living wisely' because the wise and the fool ultimately share the same earthly fate. Yet, Ecclesiastes isn't just about despair. It's a journey, and as we move through its wisdom literature, a different perspective begins to emerge, especially when we look at verses like Ecclesiastes 3:11. This verse, 'He has made everything beautiful in its time,' offers a powerful counterpoint to the earlier pronouncements of vanity. It shifts our focus from our own striving to God's divine plan and perfect timing. Suddenly, the idea of 'a time for everything bible verse' (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) makes so much more sense. There’s a season for every activity, and God is at work, orchestrating it all. This thought brings me back to Ecclesiastes 2:24, which the OCR also captured: 'There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God.' This isn't permission for reckless indulgence, but an invitation to find joy in our daily work and blessings, acknowledging them as gifts from a loving Creator. When our efforts are aligned with His timing and purpose, even the simplest tasks can hold profound meaning, far removed from the 'striving after wind' that Solomon initially lamented. It makes me think of Ephesians 2:10, where it says we are 'God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.' This gives our human effort a completely different dimension. It’s not just 'under the sun' toil, but a part of a divine design. So, while Ecclesiastes 2:11 reminds us of the fleeting nature of purely earthly pursuits, the broader message, especially when considering verses like 3:11, guides us toward finding beauty and purpose in everything God has made, all in His perfect time.
