1 John 3:20

[20] for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.

2024/4/1 Edited to

... Read moreYou know those moments when you just feel… not good enough? When your own thoughts turn against you, whispering doubts and reminding you of every mistake? That’s exactly what comes to mind when I read 1 John 3:20: 'for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.' It’s such a powerful truth, and one I’ve had to lean into so many times. Sometimes, our 'heart condemns us' because we genuinely messed up. We said something we shouldn't have, or acted in a way that goes against our values. The guilt is real. But other times, it's that nagging feeling of inadequacy, the imposter syndrome, or just a general sense of not measuring up, even when we haven't done anything explicitly 'wrong.' Our hearts, in their finite understanding, can be incredibly harsh judges. They focus on our flaws, our perceived failures, and the gaps between who we are and who we think we should be. This is where the incredible comfort of 'God is greater than our heart' comes in. It's a phrase that truly resonates with me, like that handwritten note I saw once, reminding me that God’s perspective is so much wider, so much more loving, and profoundly more just than our own self-criticism. Our hearts can be deceived, they can be overwhelmed by emotions, and they certainly don't have all the facts. But God? He is not limited by our human perceptions or our self-inflicted judgments. His love isn't conditional on our perfect performance; it's rooted in His perfect character. He sees beyond the surface-level mistakes to the intent, the struggle, and the growth happening within us. And the second part, 'and he knows everything,' is equally profound. It’s not just that He knows our sins; it’s that He knows our struggles, our fears, our past traumas, our hidden battles, and even the good intentions behind our flawed actions. He knows the full story, not just the chapter our heart is currently condemning us for. This isn't a terrifying, all-seeing eye waiting to catch us out. Instead, it's the loving gaze of a parent who understands their child completely, even when the child is stumbling. Because He knows everything, His judgment is always tempered with perfect understanding, mercy, and grace. He knows why we sometimes fail, and He offers a way back. So, what does this mean for us practically? When that wave of self-condemnation washes over you, remember this verse. Instead of dwelling on your own heart’s harsh verdict, consciously turn to God. Acknowledge your feelings, but then remind yourself that His view of you is ultimately what matters. Pray about it, confess your struggles, and ask for His perspective. Lean into His grace, knowing that His love and understanding are boundless. This isn't about ignoring personal responsibility, but about finding freedom from paralyzing shame and guilt. It's about letting God's greater love and knowledge be the ultimate authority over your self-perception, allowing you to move forward with peace and renewed hope, even when your own heart tries to hold you back.
