... Read moreAs someone new to gardening, I decided to give soil blocking a try after hearing so many positive things about it. Soil blockers are tools that press soil into compact blocks, eliminating the need for plastic seed trays and promoting healthier root development. In my experience, using a soil blocker has been a game changer, especially for starting seeds of cut flowers and other plants. One of the key benefits I noticed is how well the soil blocks retain moisture without becoming waterlogged, which helps to reduce the risk of damping-off disease—a common issue in seed starting. The blocks also make it easier to transplant seedlings since the roots are less disturbed compared to traditional pots. This has been particularly helpful for the delicate seedlings of floral plants I’m growing for my small business. Another plus is the environmental benefit. By using soil blocks, I’ve cut down on plastic waste significantly, which feels great as I try to keep my gardening as sustainable as possible. It also lightens the load when it comes to storage and cleanup because I don’t have to deal with bulky plastic trays. For anyone interested in starting seeds—whether for home gardening or as part of a small business—I highly recommend giving soil blocking a shot. It requires a small upfront investment in the right tools, but the results are worth it. Watching the seedlings thrive and knowing I’m supporting healthy root growth feels incredibly rewarding. If you’re into growing flowers, especially for cut flower gardens, soil blocking can help you cultivate strong, vibrant plants. It’s also great for gardeners looking for a more natural and less wasteful seed-starting method. Overall, this technique has boosted my enthusiasm for gardening, and I’m excited to continue experimenting with different flower varieties using soil blocks.
