✨Here’s one of my favorite places I have ever traveled to in the last few years. During the summer of 2022 we traveled to Exuma, Bahamas. 🇧🇸
✨It is just southeast of Nassau, Bahamas and is a fairly rural island that is split into Grand and Little Exuma.
✨As you can tell the pictures do not do it justice, but this was some of the bluest water I have ever seen. We toured some of the coolest and scenic places along the island. Even where some of the James Bond movies were filmed, as well as the pig and iguana islands!
... Read moreIf you're anything like me, you dream of escaping the crowds and finding those truly special, untouched places. That's exactly what I discovered in Exuma, Bahamas! While many flock to the more popular Bahamian islands, Exuma offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience that feels like a well-kept secret. It's not just another pretty beach destination; it’s an adventure waiting to happen, full of unique wildlife, cinematic landscapes, and water so blue it almost doesn’t seem real.
Getting to Exuma really sets the tone. Instead of bustling international airports, you often fly into a smaller regional one on Great Exuma. This instantly gives you that sense of stepping away from the mainstream. The vibe is laid-back, friendly, and wonderfully unhurried. Once there, getting around usually involves taxis or rented jeeps, but the real magic happens when you hit the water. Boat tours are essential for exploring the vast Exuma Cays, a string of over 365 islands and islets, each with its own charm and story.
One of the absolute highlights, and a perfect example of Exuma's unique appeal, is visiting Thunderball Grotto. As a huge James Bond fan, swimming into this underwater cave, where scenes from 'Thunderball' and 'Never Say Never Again' were filmed, was a surreal experience. The sun beams through cracks in the cave ceiling, illuminating schools of colorful fish, making it an incredible snorkeling spot. It’s not just a beautiful sight; it's a piece of movie history that you can actually swim through!
Of course, no trip to the Exuma Cays is complete without visiting the famous swimming pigs at Pig Beach. It sounds quirky, and it absolutely is! These friendly pigs paddle out to greet boats, eager for a snack. It's an experience unlike any other, full of laughter and unforgettable photo opportunities. Just a short boat ride away, you can also encounter the fascinating iguanas of Allen Cay, ancient-looking reptiles that roam their pristine island habitat. Watching them lumber around in their natural environment is surprisingly captivating.
For those seeking a bit of a hub amidst their island hopping, Staniel Cay Yacht Club is a must-visit. It's more than just a marina; it’s a lively spot where sailors, locals, and tourists mingle, share stories, and enjoy delicious food. We loved stopping there for lunch and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere before heading out to our next adventure. The entire Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park itself is a testament to untouched beauty and dedicated conservation, offering some of the most pristine snorkeling and diving spots imaginable, free from commercial development.
What truly makes Exuma an off-the-beaten-path paradise is its commitment to natural beauty and unique experiences over mass tourism. You won't find towering resorts or endless souvenir shops here. Instead, you'll discover secluded beaches where your footprints might be the only ones, vibrant marine life, and a sense of tranquility that’s increasingly rare. It’s a place where every turn reveals a new shade of blue in the ocean, and every encounter, whether with wildlife or locals, feels genuinely special. If you're craving a travel experience that's truly extraordinary and far from the usual tourist traps, Exuma is calling your name.
