5 REASONS YOU’RE NOT BUILDING MUSCLE
1. You’re not eating enough
In order to build muscle, you should aim to eat at or slightly above maintenance level to give your body enough food to put on mass. You cannot expect to build muscle while being in a caloric deficit (eating less calories than what you’re burning), because there’s nearly nothing for your body to actually build the muscle from.
1. You’re not getting enough sleep
Sleep is CRITICAL to building muscle mass. It it the one point of your day where your body fully focused on recovery instead of burning energy. In fact, the actual “muscle building” happens when you rest and sleep. NOT at the gym.
1. You’re not eating enough protein
Protein is the building block to lean muscle mass, and it is rarely stored as fat in the body. That is why it’s so crucial for you to eat a high protein diet to help build lean muscle mass. I always recommend aiming for at least .7-1g protein per lb of bodyweight.
1. You’re not progressively overloading
I’m not saying that progress will always be linear, BUT aiming to gradually increase the weight or number of reps, sets and exercises you do will give your muscles a constant reason to continue getting bigger and stronger.
1. Stress
Stress negatively impacts A BUNCH of different things…from fat loss to muscle gain. The stress hormone itself breaks down the muscles by converting muscle protein into glucose which is what can cause muscle loss.
It's so common for us girls to feel like we're putting in the work at the gym but not seeing the muscle gains we want. I totally get it – I've been there! Beyond the five crucial reasons my article already covers, let's dive a bit deeper into how we can truly optimize our efforts to build lean, strong muscle, without fear of 'getting bulky' (a common myth!). Many women aspire to that toned, strong look, and achieving it is absolutely possible with the right approach. First off, when we talk about eating enough, it’s not just about hitting a calorie number; it’s about quality and *consistency*. Think about fueling your body like a high-performance machine that requires premium fuel. Focus intently on nutrient-dense foods that support recovery and growth. For instance, after a tough workout, a delicious homemade smoothie bowl packed with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs (like the one with granola and fruits the OCR picked up!) can be a game-changer for immediate post-workout recovery. I've also found that smart meal prepping, such as having cooked chicken breasts and salmon ready to go, makes it significantly easier to hit my crucial protein targets consistently throughout the week, ensuring my muscles always have building blocks. Speaking of sleep, it’s truly our most potent, yet often overlooked, secret weapon for muscle growth and overall well-being. I used to think I could push through on minimal sleep, but my body just wasn't recovering or adapting. Imagine the serene stillness of a dark night sky – that's the kind of deep, restorative rest your muscles need to rebuild and grow stronger. During sleep, our bodies release growth hormone, essential for muscle repair. Creating a consistent bedtime routine, dimming lights and switching off screens an hour before bed, and even incorporating relaxing activities like reading or meditating, can drastically improve sleep quality. It’s when your body truly gets to work repairing those muscle fibers you challenged during your workout, transforming effort into results. For progressive overload, it's crucial to understand that it's not always about adding more weight every single session, especially for women who might be new to lifting. I used to get stuck thinking that, too! Sometimes, it’s about increasing your repetitions, doing an extra set, meticulously improving your exercise form to maximize muscle engagement, or even decreasing rest time between sets to increase intensity. Remember that image of the woman in the gym actively engaging with a dumbbell? She's not just lifting; she's challenging her muscles in varied and intelligent ways. Even trying a new exercise variation can provide a fresh stimulus. The key is to consistently challenge your muscles just a little bit more than last time, prompting them to adapt, strengthen, and grow. And finally, stress is a silent, insidious muscle killer that can derail even the most dedicated efforts. I learned this the hard way! Chronic stress significantly elevates cortisol levels, a hormone that, in excess, can actually break down muscle tissue and hinder recovery. While it's not always easy to eliminate stress from our lives entirely, effectively managing it is absolutely crucial for both physical gains and mental health. I’ve found that incorporating short mindfulness breaks, going for a leisurely walk outdoors, practicing deep breathing exercises, or even just listening to my favorite music can help significantly. Think of it like that calming neon heart light – finding those small moments of peace, joy, and self-care in your day can make a huge difference, not just for your mental well-being, but for your physical gains too. Embracing these holistic strategies has completely transformed my muscle-building journey, helping me achieve the strong, confident physique I’ve always wanted, and I truly believe they can help you unlock your strength and potential too!
