Maundy Thursday

“I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I will eat this meal again until its meeting is filled in the Kingdom of God.” (Luke 22:15-16)

... Read moreMaundy Thursday! When I first heard the name, I admit I wasn't entirely sure what it truly meant beyond being 'the Thursday before Easter.' But after reading that powerful verse from Luke and seeing the reference to Da Vinci's iconic 'Last Supper,' I decided to dig a little deeper, and wow, there's so much profound meaning packed into this one day! For me, understanding why it's called 'Maundy' really opened my eyes. It comes from the Latin 'mandatum novum,' meaning 'new commandment.' This refers to Jesus' words to his disciples: 'A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.' (John 13:34). It's not just about a meal; it's about a foundational principle of Christian life – selfless love and service. The Last Supper itself, as hinted at in the original post, is at the very heart of Maundy Thursday. This wasn't just any dinner; it was Jesus' final Passover meal with his closest friends before his crucifixion. During this meal, he instituted the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, breaking bread and sharing wine, telling them to 'do this in remembrance of me.' It’s a moment that continues to be central to Christian worship worldwide, reminding us of his sacrifice and his enduring presence. I find it so moving to think about that last gathering, knowing what was to come. Beyond the meal, one of the most striking aspects for me is the foot washing. Imagine Jesus, the master, kneeling to wash the feet of his disciples – a task usually reserved for the lowest servant. This act of humble service is such a powerful visual lesson in humility and servant leadership. It’s a call for us to emulate that same spirit, to put others before ourselves, and to serve without expecting anything in return. It really made me reflect on how I can better serve those around me in my daily life. Maundy Thursday also marks the beginning of the 'Triduum,' the three most sacred days in the Christian calendar, leading up to Easter Sunday. It sets the stage for the intense events of Good Friday (Jesus' crucifixion) and Holy Saturday (his time in the tomb), culminating in the joyous celebration of his resurrection. It’s a time of solemn reflection, preparing our hearts for the ultimate message of hope and new life. Thinking about all these elements – the new commandment of love, the institution of the Eucharist, the powerful act of foot washing, and its place in Holy Week – has truly deepened my appreciation for this significant day. It’s not just a historical event; it’s a living invitation to reflect on love, service, and sacrifice, and how these principles can transform our own lives and communities. It's a reminder that even in moments of impending suffering, there is profound meaning and a call to love.
