The Met Gala, formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, began in 1948 as a midnight supper organized by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert to fund the newly established Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Initially a modest event with tickets priced at $50, it evolved into a high-profile fundraiser under the stewardship of figures like Diana Vreeland, who, as a consultant in the 1970s, introduced themed exhibitions and celebrity allure. Since 1995, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has chaired the event, transforming it into a global spectacle that merges fashion, art, and celebrity culture. Held annually on the first Monday in May, the Gala celebrates the Costume Institute’s exhibitions while raising millions for its preservation and acquisition efforts, cementing its status as a cultural cornerstone.
