Linus, who is known for being fierce (once insulting the brutal NVIDIA), came back to hit Musk relentlessly, reflecting problems in the tech industry that likes to use simple but ridiculous metrics, especially after Musk fired a lot of employees at X and changed the radical development policy. The dev community on Reddit / Twitter took to tease each other for fun. Some people agree that it was "toxic," but some say Musk may have been joking intentionally.
In a video interview clip on the Linus Tech Tips (LTT) channel, Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, made a direct comment on Elon Musk's way of evaluating programmer's work at X (formerly Twitter), with Musk once rewarding employees with removing the most code (to shrink codebase), but Torvalds saw this as part of a measure from the "number of lines of code" (lines of code), which he called "demasiado estÚpido" or "too foolish."
Linus was asked the worst metric in evaluating software engineers, and he pointed out that counting code lines distorted the understanding of software development work because it encouraged writing unnecessary code (to increase the number) or blindly removing code (to reduce the number), which undermined quality, performance, and good design. Linus emphasized that development actually had to focus on "solving problems wisely," not quantity.
