The Perfect Fall Thriller💚🔪

💚Safe and Sound by Laura McHugh

💚Trigger Warnings: CSA

I was searching for some spooky/thriller books at the library, and I came across this one. So far, it's been a quick and interesting read. I will probably finish it today because I don't want to put it down until I've found out who's done it👀

Have ya'll read any good thrillers lately? I'm looking for suggestions!💚

Edit: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked the atmosphere of the town that feels like its decaying around them, the almost palpable broken dreams. The symbolism of "they take their whole lives to go from one side of town to the other"- The hospital to the cemetery. It's an almost suffocating type of hopelessness.

The main reason this is a 4-star read is the unsatisfying/anti climatic ending. There were lots of B plots that we never really get an answer to. We find out what happened to Grace, and that's just kind of it. It felt unresolved still for me.

Overall, I'm not mad I read it but it definitely isn't in my top for this month. If you read this one, what did you think?

... Read moreAfter diving into 'Safe and Sound,' I've been thinking a lot about what truly makes a psychological mystery thriller unforgettable. That feeling of being completely engrossed, trying to figure out 'who did it' right alongside the characters, is just the best, even if the ending sometimes leaves you wanting more, as was my experience with this one. For me, it's all about the atmosphere. Like in 'Safe and Sound,' where the decaying town almost becomes a character itself. A 'dark house' vibe, whether literal or metaphorical, can really amp up the tension. It's not just about cheap jump scares; it's the slow burn, the creeping dread, and the sense that secrets are buried deep within the walls or the minds of the characters. When you're currently reading a book that has this kind of palpable tension, it truly elevates the entire experience. Many of the best thriller mysteries involve uncovering long-lost secrets or unresolved past events, much like the themes we see in stories where characters, perhaps two sisters, set out to learn the truth behind a vanished loved one, even if it puts them in danger. This theme of family secrets and the ripple effects of past traumas is a goldmine for psychological tension. You're constantly questioning everyone's motives, including the narrator's! It’s this intricate web of deceit and hidden truths that makes these stories so compelling. If you're like me and always on the hunt for your next gripping read, here are a few thoughts on finding other psychological thrillers that might leave a lasting impression. I always look for books where the lines between good and evil are blurred, and where the ending genuinely shocks you, even if it leaves you a bit unsettled. I love checking out what other readers are 'currently reading' in book clubs or on social media for new ideas, especially when they rave about a new 'thriller mystery.' Think about books where a seemingly idyllic family hides a sinister truth, or where someone returns to their hometown only to unearth a chilling mystery. The best ones make you question everything you thought you knew about human nature. When I pick up a new book in this genre, I'm hoping for that perfect blend of suspense, character depth, and a puzzle that keeps me up all night. Libraries are fantastic for discovering these hidden gems, and I've found so many unputdownable books just by browsing the thriller section. Don't forget to check out review sites too; hearing what others thought about the 'who did it' aspect can sometimes guide you to your next favorite read. So, if you enjoyed the atmospheric tension and the 'who did it' puzzle of a book like 'Safe and Sound,' there's a whole world of psychological thrillers waiting for you to get lost in. Happy reading, and let me know if you find another one that you truly can't put down!
