Garden season has started!

2025/4/10 Edited to

... Read moreIt's officially my favorite time of year again – garden season! There's nothing quite like stepping outside, feeling the sun, and getting your hands dirty. My latest 'Garden to do list!' is packed with exciting tasks, and I wanted to share a deeper dive into how I approach kickstarting my vegetable garden. First off, figuring out the 'best planting calendar for my zone' is always my starting point. It's so vital to know your last and first frost dates. For instance, while some of you might be wondering about the 'best time to plant potatoes in Ohio,' I always look up my local extension office's recommendations. They often have tailored calendars that tell you exactly 'when is the best time to start gardening' for your specific area. This helps me decide 'what plants I can plant' right now and which ones need to wait a bit. This season, I'm super excited about 'Watering potatoes!' and 'Watering strawberries!' – two of my absolute favorites! I've been busy getting everything ready to 'fill these grow bags!' and then, of course, 'Planting in all the grow bags!' It’s been a game-changer for me, especially for crops like potatoes and strawberries, giving them plenty of space and making harvesting a breeze. If you're new to gardening, grow bags are a fantastic option for an 'urban gardening life' or if you have limited space. Beyond the big staples, I’m also planning for a diverse 'vegetable garden'. I'm currently pondering 'when to transplant kale seedlings outside' and considering 'celery companion plant' ideas to help deter pests naturally. I’ve found that companion planting really makes a difference. For those of you in different climates, if you're curious about 'growing raspberries in Ohio' or 'zone 7 gardening' in general, remember to research varieties suited for your specific conditions. It’s all about matching the plant to your environment for the best results. And what about starting from scratch? Many of you ask about 'seeds and such' and the 'best time to plant seeds outdoors.' It really depends on the seed! Some, like certain annuals or leafy greens, can go directly into the soil after the last frost, while others need a head start indoors. I'm also thinking about adding some beautiful flowers this year; maybe 'planting vinca seeds' for ground cover. It's a lot of work, but seeing those tiny sprouts emerge makes every effort worthwhile. My 'Garden to do list!' is always evolving, but the joy of nurturing plants from seed to harvest is truly unmatched. I even end up with 'Extra for neighbors!' sometimes, which is such a lovely bonus. Happy gardening, everyone!
