Lewis committed self murder in Tennessee while on suicide watch at the Benders residence on the Natchez Trace . He caught VD from the Mandan Indian girls and as the trained medic for the group he self medicated with mercury and became insane . He shot his temple and it pealed the scalp back but wasn't fatal so he shot himself in the stomach that was also not a fast death . When the people in his party in the morning
checked on him , he was lying in bed slicing himself with a razor to expedite things . His last words were " It is so hard to die and I am so tough ". Then he died .
in the journals he admits to shooting a young teen boy who tried to steal his horse . while hunting on a sandbag on the river
he shot himself through the butt cheek . He blamed someone else but his gun wasn't fired and the bullet didn't match . They didn't check Lewis's gun , he was The president Thomas Jeffersons personal secretary and was treated like a primadonna .
