I remember this rocking my world when I became a mother seven years ago.

Before I had children, I was praised and admired for my commitment to fitness.

But the moment I became pregnant, I was called selfish and vain.

The same behavior. Completely different label.

When I started taking my son to gym daycare for an hour, people told me it was cruel and selfish.

That this time was short.

That I needed to soak up how precious these years are.

It gutted me. I internalized it. And I almost fell for it.

Because as a new mother, part of me thought, well maybe they’re right.

Maybe taking an hour a day to honor my health and my mental capacity IS selfish.

I’m a mother now. My babies come first.

I think so many of you can relate to this.

Even just a month ago, I shared how my house can sometimes get messy because life happens, and that I’ll choose to move my body over laundry because laundry can wait.

I got shamed for it. Go look at those comments.

So here’s my gentle encouragement:

Taking a few days a week to have an hour to yourself is not selfish. It’s taking care of yourself.

Because you need that too.

And when you take care of yourself, you get to take care of your family and those around you with more energy and intention.

It’s the furthest thing from selfish.

If this resonates with you, you’re my people. #motherhood #momswholift #gymmotivation🏋️‍♀️ #momsover30 #postpartum

... Read moreAs a mom, I completely relate to the tough balancing act between caring for your children and honoring your own needs. When I started carving out time for myself—whether it was heading to the gym or simply having a quiet moment—I faced a lot of judgment and guilt from others who thought I was being selfish. But I've learned that self-care is not a luxury; it's essential. Taking an hour for yourself, even a few days a week, helps replenish your mental and physical energy. It can be as simple as using a gym daycare service or finding a trusted friend or family member to watch your kids briefly. This time allows you to reconnect with who you are beyond motherhood, to stay healthy and energized, and to show up more fully for your family. The guilt is real and pervasive because society often tells mothers that every moment must be devoted to their children. However, an important lesson I've embraced is that you cannot pour from an empty cup. Prioritizing your well-being enables you to parent with more patience, intention, and joy. Moreover, the phrases "selfish" and "vain" thrown around can make you second guess your decisions. But it's crucial to recognize that these labels do not reflect reality. Taking care of your body and mind is a form of love that benefits everyone around you. From my personal experience, when I treated my fitness and mental breaks as non-negotiable appointments, I noticed a positive shift in my mood and resilience. Even letting some household tasks wait was an act of kindness to myself. Laundry can indeed wait; your mental health cannot. If you feel guilty about putting yourself first occasionally, you're not alone. Find a supportive community like #momswholift or #postpartum groups to share experiences and encouragement. Remember, strong, healthy moms raise happy families.
