☘️Finally headed back to KS after a 10 day visit to family!! I just wanted to share my two cents on the trip <3
🍀First, I just wanna point out that AZ isn’t all hot dry nasty weather unless you go in the summer. In the winter is beautiful temps, perfect for wearing both shorts and leggings. However, it can suck to pack for both cold and hot weather.
🌿AZ is beautiful and although I didn’t go crazy “sightseeing” I found that there is other ways to enjoy the trip. I didn’t go to the Grand Canyon or Tucson BUT, I did eat delicious breakfast, make a terrarium and go to cheaper national parks!
☘️Jade and Clover is the most adorable little shop that sells literally all of your BOHO needs, I have gotten so many stickers from there and making a terrarium was relatively cheap. To make my terrarium I chose from a variety of succulents ranging from cacti, aloe vera, etc. Then you choose various sand colors to place at the bottom along with the container shape and mini decor!!! I chose a Little rock and a baby mushroom for my aloe Vera baby!! Plus, this was all roughly $35!
🪴Brunch is my favorite time of day SO, I found 2 amazing brunch places to eat. Firstly, Wonderful Wanda’s is the most adorable “hole in the wall” brunch diner I’ve ever been to. Not to mention I got a HUGE classic breakfast with bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, and toast for only $11???? Like are you kidding?? Secondly, Hash Kitchen was delicious with huge portions as well however it’s a little more expensive and it had a unique “college” aura with a bar and DJ inside. So, you’ll be listening to bumping music while you’re eating!
🌱Finally, the two national parks I went to were $5 per person!! I would highly recommend south mountain, and the petrified forest! They also have great unique hikes!!
... Read moreOkay, so I shared my initial Arizona highlights, but let's dive a bit deeper into making your AZ trip truly unforgettable and, dare I say, *unusual*! One thing I quickly learned is that Arizona's weather is a whole mood. While I mentioned it can be tricky packing for both warm days and chilly nights, my pro tip for winter/spring visits is layers, layers, layers! Think light jackets, versatile scarves, and both shorts and leggings. You'll thank me when you're enjoying a crisp morning hike and then soaking up midday sun.
Beyond the terrarium workshop at Jade and Clover (which, seriously, was such a fun, creative break from typical tourism and now I have a cute little piece of AZ at home!), I stumbled upon some other fantastic local spots. For those who love a good caffeine fix, you'll find some really cool, independent coffee shops. While I didn't get to visit every single one, I heard great things about places like Black Rock Coffee – imagine grabbing a unique local brew before heading out for your day's adventures. It's these little local stops that really make a trip feel authentic.
And speaking of unique experiences, have you ever considered visiting a botanical garden at night? The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, for instance, often has special events or illuminations that transform the desert landscape into something magical after dark. It's a completely different vibe than a daytime visit and totally falls under the 'unusual' category.
Let's talk more about those national parks! Petrified Forest National Park, for example, isn't just 'cheap' – it's otherworldly. Seeing those massive, ancient petrified wood pieces scattered across the landscape is like stepping onto another planet. The colors in the rock formations are incredible, and it offers a quiet, reflective experience far from the crowds of more famous parks. South Mountain also offers amazing views and trails right near the city, perfect for a quick escape without a long drive.
For foodies, while my brunch finds were epic, don't shy away from exploring local markets or street food festivals if your timing is right. You might discover some incredible Southwestern fusion or indigenous-inspired cuisine that you won't find anywhere else. These are often where the true culinary gems are hidden.
Overall, my biggest takeaway from my Arizona trip was to embrace the unexpected. Don't be afraid to veer off the well-trodden path. Ask locals for their favorite spots, look up unique workshops or events, and just enjoy the stunning, diverse landscapes this state has to offer. It's not just about the Grand Canyon; it's about the countless smaller, equally breathtaking, and truly unusual moments you'll create.
