Mediterranean diet and how it supports heart healt

Singapore’s HealthXchange (by SingHealth) recently shared an article about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and how it supports heart health.

Mediterranean eating focuses on fresh ingredients, olive oil, seafood, vegetables, legumes and lean proteins — simple food, naturally balanced and full of flavor.

Many dishes at Hapiha follow these same principles, using fresh ingredients instead of processed food.

In this post we highlight a few examples from our menu — from hummus and falafel to grilled seafood and lean souvlaki.

... Read moreIncorporating the Mediterranean diet into your daily routine can be a transformative step towards improving cardiovascular health. This diet, widely celebrated for its heart-protective benefits, emphasizes the consumption of fresh, natural foods such as olive oil, seafood rich in omega-3 fatty acids, legumes, vegetables, and lean proteins. From personal experience, switching to Mediterranean-inspired meals has significantly enhanced my overall well-being. For instance, I often enjoy dishes like falafel, made from chickpeas packed with plant protein and fiber, which keeps me feeling full longer while helping to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Similarly, hummus, a blend of chickpeas and olive oil, provides heart-healthy fats that aid in reducing inflammation and improving arterial function. Grilled seafood options, such as seabream or sardine fritte, are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, known to lower triglycerides and decrease the risk of heart disease. Lean grilled meats like souvlaki and lamb kofta offer high-quality protein without the added saturated fats found in processed meats, making them ideal for maintaining muscle health and supporting a balanced diet. Another benefit I've noticed is the diet’s focus on fiber-rich vegetables like eggplant in dishes such as moussaka, which helps regulate blood sugar and supports digestion. This mindful approach to eating eliminates processed foods, reducing unnecessary intake of sodium and unhealthy fats that contribute to hypertension and heart disease. What makes the Mediterranean diet particularly sustainable is its emphasis on flavorful, satisfying meals. This means healthier eating doesn’t have to feel like a sacrifice but rather an enjoyable lifestyle choice. In my journey, I’ve found that combining fresh ingredients with traditional spices creates delicious meals that the entire family appreciates. For those living in Singapore or other urban areas, finding restaurants like Hapiha that serve authentic Mediterranean dishes can make adopting this diet easier and more enjoyable. Trying different dishes from hummus and falafel to grilled seafood lets you explore a variety of nutritious options while supporting heart health. In summary, the Mediterranean diet is not just about specific foods but about embracing a balanced, wholesome lifestyle. This approach can lead to a 70% improvement in heart health, as highlighted by HealthXchange Singapore’s recent findings. Whether you’re cooking at home or dining out, focusing on fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients will nourish your body and protect your heart for the long term.
