What My Toddler Ate For Lunch

We’re going through a big snack phase over here…which I never anticipated being an issue until now.

The other day my daughter began asking for unhealthy snack foods in place of her meals. Popcorn, cookies, goldfish, etc. She has not gone through a phase like this before, since she’s usually a very good eater.

I thought the reason behind the meal protest was that she was getting bored of some of the foods she was eating. I’ve been trying to add in a few new food items to get her interested in eating meals again, and it seems to have done the trick!

We discovered that hummus is one of her most liked new foods, which is amazing since it’s nutrient dense and a great vessel for veggies. My daughter has always loved cucumbers, but I offered her red and yellow peppers to dip in the hummus instead, and she ate maybe one lol. She asked for more peppers with dinner and ate about half of them, so I think we’re on to something!

Comment below what some of your kid’s favorite foods are! I’ll take all the ideas 🍓🌱🥑🧀🫐

... Read moreNavigating the world of toddler meals can feel like a daily culinary adventure, often with more misses than hits! Like many of you, I've had my fair share of mealtime battles and snack phase struggles. It's so easy for little ones to get fixated on treats, making balanced meals a real challenge. After my daughter started protesting meals in favor of snacks, I knew I had to switch things up. I've learned that variety and presentation can make a huge difference. One of our recent wins, as I shared, was introducing hummus. It’s amazing how a simple dip can transform veggies! My daughter absolutely loved dipping red and yellow peppers into it, and I felt great knowing she was getting a nutrient-dense snack. It’s a fantastic way to get those crucial vitamins and fiber into their diet. Cucumbers are another great option for dipping, and if you're feeling adventurous, try different colored bell peppers to keep things visually exciting. Beyond just dips, I've found that offering a mix of textures and flavors keeps things interesting. For lunch, think about building a 'toddler platter' with small portions of different foods. For instance, a small serving of Spanish rice (made soft and mild for little palates) can be a great base. You can mix in finely chopped, soft-cooked vegetables like carrots or peas for extra nutrition. Alongside that, include some small pieces of protein like shredded chicken, black beans, or cheese cubes. Don’t forget a fruit component – berries, sliced banana, or apple wedges are always a hit. Adding healthy fats like a few slices of avocado or a dollop of plain yogurt can also boost calorie and nutrient intake. Here are a few more strategies that have helped me tackle picky eating: Involve Them in the Kitchen: Even at a young age, toddlers can help! Let them wash veggies, stir ingredients (safely!), or choose between two healthy options. When they feel part of the process, they're often more likely to eat what's offered. Consistent Meal and Snack Times: Establishing a routine helps regulate their appetite. They learn to expect food at certain times, reducing constant grazing and making them genuinely hungry for meals. Offer, Don't Force: It can take many exposures for a child to accept a new food. Keep offering a small portion of a challenged food alongside familiar favorites without pressure. Avoid making mealtime a battleground. Make it Fun: Cut sandwiches into fun shapes, arrange veggies like a smiley face, or use colorful plates. Sometimes, presentation is half the battle! Limit Drinks Before Meals: Filling up on milk or juice right before a meal can curb their appetite. Offer water primarily throughout the day. Remember, every toddler is different, and what works for one might not work for another. The key is patience, persistence, and celebrating those small wins – like when they finish half their Spanish rice and hummus! Keep experimenting, and don't be afraid to try new things. You've got this, mama!
