Respecting Your Body Postpartum
I didn’t love my body postpartum. A huge challenge for me after having kids was accepting who I was. I couldn’t force myself to love a body that felt so new and foreign to me, and I was okay with that. I knew that having acceptance and respect for my new body postpartum was how I was going to learn to love my body in the long run.
Accepting and acknowledging the fact that I birthed a whole human is the first step I took to loving myself again. I remember being two months postpartum and upset at how I looked in a family picture. I had 30 lbs of added weight which is so so normal, but I couldn’t admit that at the time. I felt like I wasn’t doing enough to “bounce back” when in reality I had my baby in me eight weeks prior.
Slowly, I worked on accepting myself, respecting myself, and that eventually led to loving myself. Having two daughters, I knew that I never wanted them to hear me self criticize my body image. If I want to teach my daughters self-love, then I need to lead by example. I told myself affirmations of love, prioritized eating healthy, drank lots of water, and went on walks. This allowed me to feel physically and mentally healthy, and was the main reason for my success in loving who I am.
Postpartum is a mental battle, but it’s important to keep in mind that it is just as much physical. Treat your body and mind with respect for EVERYTHING you’ve accomplished. You’ve come so far, and you’re still climbing mountains and pushing boundaries. P.S. YOU’RE PERFECT AS YOU ARE 🩷
