Trust the Process
My 2024 goal has been to become more intentionally spontaneous. That’s the only way I can think to put it. Not recklessly spontaneous, but decision-making with less pressure. I am a big planner and I need to have each detail of everything worked out in advance. It causes me an unbearable amount of anxiety and unhappiness.
This year, I decided things would be different. I wasn’t gonna let my life be ruled by too much structure and overthinking. I wanted to know what life was like without overthinking.
When my partner and I got engaged a couple of months ago, we decided we weren’t going to stress about planning our future. We were going to trust the process and let everything fall into place. When I tell you the moment we began believing in this mindset, it did! It all fell into place. One day, we told our family we didn’t have any reason to wait until the fall just to save money or be in debt for a big, stressful wedding. We couldn’t afford to pay to feed and entertain everyone. As a huge people pleaser, this was hard to accept and seemed selfish, but I let people know that we would be having a courthouse ceremony and that I understood if people couldn’t make it in a weeks notice or did not support this decision. We weren’t going to dress up or do any of the traditional wedding things, so I sent out the location in a group text rather than fancy invites. Those would have taken too much planning and overthinking. We weren’t sure anyone would show up. The next day, I walked into a casual boutique in my small town. I was looking for a candle, but I found the wedding dress I was never looking for. It was $50 and fit my mid-sized body I was self-conscious of perfectly. On the day of the ceremony, all of our friends and family were waiting for us in the courthouse hallway. Someone had bought us a small wedding cake. The judge was wonderful. Everything was falling into place. I had an anxiety-free wedding day.
I loved the carefree feeling of peace this gave me. Trusting the process and being more spontaneous about my plans had such a wonderful outcome that we “planned” our weekend mini honeymoon. We drove 5 hours away and stayed in the same state. We didn’t have an itinerary or any plans besides the hotel we booked. When we got there, we discovered that the hotel had the word “tapestry” in the name. Our judge that day had used the word tapestry as the theme of our ceremony. She used the word a lot and mentioned how building our lives together would be like creating a tapestry. She told us that we would weave our own story. We got in the elevator up to our room and saw a sign on the wall that said “weave your own story”. Everything seemed like a sign. The entire weekend, we stopped wherever the day took us. If we went the wrong way or missed an exit, we would find something even better on accident. We stumbled across free festivals, great food, lots of cool animals, and very kind people. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
I've shared my journey of an anxiety-free wedding and honeymoon, but the concept of 'embracing spontaneity' goes so much deeper than just big life events. For me, it truly means letting go of the need to control every single outcome and instead, being open to the unexpected. It's not about being reckless or unprepared, but about making room for joy and discovery in the everyday. After experiencing the magic of our spontaneous wedding, my partner and I have tried to weave this philosophy into more aspects of our lives. You know, like that 'tapestry' theme our judge mentioned – building something beautiful, piece by piece, even if you don't know exactly what the next thread will be. One of the biggest takeaways for me was realizing how much anxiety I carried trying to predict and plan for every single scenario. Now, when I feel that familiar tension creeping in, I actively remind myself to 'trust the process.' So, how can you start embracing spontaneity in your own life? It doesn't have to be a grand gesture. Start small. Instead of planning every minute of your weekend, maybe pick one activity and leave the rest open. Or, if you're like me and tend to over-research every purchase, try just walking into a shop and seeing what catches your eye – you might stumble upon your own 'perfect $50 dress' moment, finding something you weren't even looking for but absolutely needed! Another practical tip is to cultivate a mindset of curiosity. When things don't go exactly to plan, try to see it as a 'spontaneous discovery' rather than a setback. Remember how we got lost on our honeymoon and found something even better? That's the kind of magic I'm talking about. It's about shifting your perspective from 'this went wrong' to 'what interesting thing might happen now?' This attitude has truly enriched my daily life, making even mundane tasks feel a bit more like an adventure. Embracing spontaneity has also profoundly impacted my relationships. It’s helped me remember to 'just love each other,' as that cup said. It frees up mental space, allowing me to be more present and less distracted by future worries. I've found that when I'm less rigid, I'm more adaptable and understanding, which definitely makes for a happier 'smiling couple' in the long run! Ultimately, for me, 'embracing spontaneity meaning' boils down to finding freedom in flexibility. It's about recognizing that life rarely follows a meticulously crafted itinerary, and that's perfectly okay. In fact, it's often where the most beautiful stories are written. It’s about creating your own 'happily ever after' by being present, open, and willing to follow where life leads, even if it’s an unplanned detour. So, take a deep breath, let go of some of that pressure, and see what wonderful, unexpected moments are waiting for you.
