As a nurse, I have a front row seat to the sinking ship that is healthcare. For years now. Healthcare workers have been trying to plug the detrimental “holes” in our ship, with our fingers and toes. But here we are, putting up with poor leadership, healthcare worker “imposters”, emotional/physical abuse pretty much daily and now as the cherry on top, we have to live in fear of jail time due to the actions of others.
Healthcare professionals are essential for the wellbeing of society, yet they often face a multitude of challenges that can severely impact their mental and emotional health. One of the critical issues is the lack of effective leadership within healthcare systems. A study from the American Nurses Association points out that poor management leads to increased burnout and job dissatisfaction. Furthermore, the rising prevalence of 'imposter syndrome' among healthcare workers exacerbates the situation, causing feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Moreover, emotional and physical abuse in healthcare settings remains a glaring issue. The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch reports that 1 in 5 healthcare workers has experienced harassment or aggression from patients and their families. This not only affects the quality of patient care but also jeopardizes the safety and well-being of staff. In recent years, legislative changes have increased the scrutiny on healthcare providers, often putting them at risk of legal consequences for incidents beyond their control. This creates an atmosphere of fear that can hinder the provision of quality care, as nurses and healthcare workers become preoccupied with potential repercussions rather than focusing on their patients. The combination of these elements creates a 'sinking ship' scenario in healthcare, where workers feel overwhelmed and unsupported. It's imperative that we advocate for better resources, support systems, and a culture of safety to ensure healthcare workers can perform their duties effectively and without fear.
