“(2 Corinthians 5:21) 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (NKJV)

This verse captures the heart of the gospel. Paul lifts our eyes to the staggering truth that Jesus, the sinless Son of God, stepped into our place. He did not merely carry sin as a burden; He was made to be sin for us; treated as if He had committed every sin we ever committed.

Why? So that we might stand before God clothed in a righteousness we did not earn. This is not self‑improvement, not moral polishing, not spiritual striving. It is a gift, full, free, and forever. When God looks at the obedient believer, He sees the righteousness of His Son.

This truth steadies the heart on difficult days. You are not defined by your failures, your past, or your weaknesses. You are defined by Christ’s righteousness placed upon you.

Imagine a courtroom where a guilty man stands before the judge. The evidence is overwhelming. The sentence is certain. But then the judge steps down from the bench, removes his own spotless robe, and places it on the guilty man. He then takes the man’s tattered, stained clothing and puts it on Himself. The guilty man walks out free, fully pardoned, fully accepted, because the judge took his place.

That is the gospel. That is the exchange of Calvary. Christ took what was ours “sin” so we could receive what was His “righteousness.”

... Read moreReflecting deeply on 2 Corinthians 5:21 has transformed my perspective on grace and identity. The verse tells us that Jesus, who knew no sin, was made to be sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. This means that the forgiveness and righteousness we receive are not based on our own merit or attempts to improve ourselves but are entirely a gift through faith in Christ. In my personal walk, this truth provides incredible comfort especially during moments of failure or doubt. Instead of being condemned by my past mistakes, I remind myself that Christ took my sin upon Himself. The analogy of the courtroom where the judge swaps clothes with the guilty man perfectly illustrates this exchange—Jesus took on all our sin and shame, and in return, we receive His perfect righteousness. Living with this understanding frees me from the burden of trying to earn God’s favor. It’s not about moral polishing or spiritual striving; it’s about resting in the finished work of Christ on the cross. This gospel message offers assurance and steadies the heart because it secures our acceptance with God not by works, but by grace. Moreover, embracing this truth impacts how we see others. We are all made righteous through Christ, which calls us to extend the same grace and compassion to those around us. It’s a powerful reminder that our identity and worth are rooted in Jesus’s righteousness, not in our own performance. In summary, 2 Corinthians 5:21 invites us to grasp the depth of the gospel—not only as an abstract doctrine but as a life-changing reality that shapes how we view ourselves, God, and others. It is a daily source of hope, encouragement, and freedom that I continue to experience and share.
