The importance of nonviolent communication

I was introduced to nonviolent communication through a speaker and felt very inspired to learn more.

I borrowed the book "Say what you mean", which elaborates on the importance of nonviolent communication.

Nonviolent communication can be applied in our daily lives, such as when talking to our partners, family members, or colleagues.

It is very effective in improving relationships, though not 100% guaranteed.

Through nonviolent communication, we observe, express our feelings, share our needs, and make requests to the person we want to communicate with.

It helps to foster empathy, reduce conflict, and build understanding towards one another.

I’m sharing this because I hope people can have healthier relationships with their loved ones. :)

... Read moreNonviolent communication (NVC) goes beyond just avoiding conflict—it’s about building genuine connection with others. One key insight I gained from exploring NVC is how important it is to carefully observe what’s happening without judgment, then honestly express how it makes me feel and what I need from the situation. For example, instead of saying, "You’re always late," I might say, "When meetings start late, I feel frustrated because I value punctuality. Could we agree on starting on time?" This shifts the conversation from blame to collaboration. The book "Say What You Mean" highlights that effective NVC includes making clear requests rather than demands. When I frame my requests positively and ask for confirmation to ensure understanding, I notice that my conversations lead to better outcomes. It also emphasizes replacing the word "need" with more natural expressions like "value" or "long for," which helps avoid cultural misunderstandings around the word need. In practice, I’ve found that NVC helps when communicating with family, friends, or colleagues, especially during stressful times. Mindfully listening and asking reflective questions like, "What are you taking away from this?" encourages empathy and deeper understanding. This method isn’t foolproof—relationships still have challenges—but NVC provides tools to navigate conflicts more peacefully and maintain connection. By adopting these communication habits, I feel more empowered to handle emotions constructively and create a safe space for openness. The book offers a clear road map to develop these skills and encourages us to hear others’ feelings linked to their needs without judgment. If you're interested in enhancing your interpersonal skills and fostering healthier relationships, I highly recommend diving into nonviolent communication practices and the wisdom shared in "Say What You Mean."
