My experience working as a cashier for 6 months

Honestly, my experience working as a cashier has been quite okay overall.

My job is mainly to answer customers’ enquiries, scan the items they want to buy, ask for their membership details, process their payment, and sometimes upsell products.

However, not every day is a sunny day.

Sometimes life isn’t that easy.

Even though the job is manageable for me, some customers can be very demanding.

They shout at you as if it’s your fault for putting the wrong price on the item.

Honestly, I’m a cashier, not a retail assistant.

I mainly handle payments at the counter.

Why blame me for the wrong price that my colleagues put?

Even if customers tell me that I should be more careful next time, there is actually nothing I can do about it.

I’m just a part-time cashier.

I don’t put price tags on the items.

There was one incident where a customer demanded to see the manager because a retail assistant did not remove the promotional price tag after the promotion ended.

The item was originally $79.90, and during the promotion it was $64.90.

When I scanned the item, the POS system showed $79.90 instead of $64.90 because the promotion had already ended.

When I explained that the promotion had ended and she had to pay $79.90, she insisted that it was the staff’s fault for not changing the price tag and demanded to see the manager.

I had no choice but to call the manager over.

Thankfully, the manager managed to settle the situation.

Honestly, I just wish people could be kinder.

No one is having an easy life.

... Read moreReflecting on my time as an intern cashier, I encountered several challenges that taught me valuable lessons. One major problem was handling customer frustrations over pricing errors caused by other staff members. While it's tempting to take the blame, I realized that clear communication and calmly explaining the situation often helped de-escalate tension. Even so, some customers insisted on speaking to management, which reminded me of the importance of support from supervisors during tough interactions. Another issue was multitasking between answering questions, scanning items, and sometimes trying to upsell products. I found that staying organized and maintaining a polite tone helped improve efficiency and customer satisfaction. Learning the POS system thoroughly was also crucial for handling payments swiftly and accurately. To address these challenges, I developed a few solutions: always double-checking promotional tags before shifts, practicing patience and empathy with customers, and asking for help when needed. These approaches not only made my work smoother but also improved my confidence behind the counter. Finally, I want to emphasize that being a cashier isn't just about processing payments; it's about managing customer relationships and teamwork. Though demanding at times, this role gave me insight into retail operations and strengthened my communication skills. I hope my experience encourages others in similar roles to stay resilient and keep learning.

The customer isn’t wrong but he or she could talk to u nicely. Since I m former retail assistant, we r taught to remove the promotion tag on the day itself to avoid giving wrong info to the customer. I can tell u all customers r like that because they think they r right…just 1 ear in and 1 ear out.

If the customer cannot talk nicely need to be rude and you need to be standing strong to firm prices and fight your rights. after 6 months pls leave. company don't listen
