My porch garden

... Read moreCreating 'My porch garden' was a dream, but making it truly functional and thriving took some learning! Like many of you, I started with a few pots and a lot of enthusiasm, only to realize that a successful porch garden, especially a container one, needs careful planning, particularly when it comes to sunlight exposure. This journey taught me a lot, and I'm excited to share my go-to tips to help you cultivate your own vibrant and practical outdoor space. First, let's talk about building a functional container garden. It’s not just about aesthetics; it's about making sure your plants have the best environment to flourish. I quickly learned that drainage is paramount! Always choose pots with drainage holes, or drill some yourself if necessary. For materials, terra cotta pots look beautiful and allow roots to breathe, but they dry out quickly. Plastic or glazed ceramic pots retain moisture better, which can be a lifesaver during hot spells. Don't forget the size – plants need room to grow, so consider their mature size when selecting containers. Next came the challenge of proper sunlight exposure. This was arguably the trickiest part for my porch garden. I spent a week observing my porch at different times of the day to understand its light patterns. Does it get morning sun, afternoon sun, or mostly shade? This assessment is crucial for plant selection. East-facing porches typically receive gentle morning sun, ideal for many herbs like basil and mint, and some leafy greens. West-facing porches get intense afternoon sun, which can be harsh; here, heat-loving plants like certain varieties of tomatoes, peppers, or drought-tolerant flowers thrive, or you might need to provide some afternoon shade. North-facing porches are often shadier, perfect for impatiens, ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving beauties. South-facing porches usually offer full sun all day, a paradise for most vegetables and sun-loving annuals. Once you know your light conditions, you can select the right plants. For 'My porch garden,' I found that mixing edibles with ornamentals created a wonderful balance. Cherry tomatoes or strawberries cascading from hanging baskets, alongside fragrant basil, rosemary, and vibrant petunias, not only look good but also provide fresh ingredients. Remember to group plants with similar light and watering needs together. If some spots get too much sun, consider using a lightweight shade cloth during the hottest parts of the day, or move smaller containers to shadier spots. For shadier areas, try bright foliage plants to add visual interest. Finally, making it truly functional involves consistent care. Container plants dry out faster than in-ground plants, so regular watering is a must. I found that self-watering planters or a simple drip irrigation system can be a game-changer. Also, container plants need more frequent feeding, as nutrients leach out with watering. A balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks keeps them happy. And don't forget pest control – organic options like neem oil can help keep unwanted visitors at bay. With these tips, 'My porch garden' has transformed from a simple collection of pots into a thriving, productive, and beautiful extension of my home!

The white pumpkin I’ll always keep on my porch
I didn’t know what white pumpkins meant until after my miscarriage in 2018… now, every time I see one, I stop. It’s such a gentle reminder that love doesn’t end where life does. If you’ve experienced a loss like this, I hope you know your grief is valid, your love is real, and your story matters.
