I can't believe this just happened, but we just made it past viability at 24 weeks! For anyone unfamiliar, 24 weeks is often considered the age of viability in pregnancy, meaning if a baby were to be born at this stage, they would have a significant chance of survival, thanks to incredible medical advancements. This milestone is huge for any pregnancy, but for a surrogate journey like mine, it carries an extra layer of profound emotion and relief. From the moment I embarked on this surrogacy path, especially knowing the struggles my intended parents (IPs) faced with infertility and IVF, every week has felt like a precious step forward. There's a constant undercurrent of hope mixed with a natural anxiety that comes with carrying such a precious life. Reaching 24 weeks feels like shedding a huge weight. It's a moment my IPs and I have been dreaming of, a tangible sign that we're truly on our way to bringing their baby home. It's not just a number on a calendar; it's a profound shift in certainty and hope. Before 24 weeks, the medical community generally considers a fetus to be pre-viable. While doctors always do their best, survival rates increase dramatically after this point. Modern neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are simply incredible, offering specialized care for extremely premature babies. Knowing that we've reached this benchmark offers such peace of mind. It means the baby has developed substantially, with lungs maturing and other vital systems becoming more robust, even if still needing support outside the womb. My journey, like many others touched by infertility and IVF, has been one of immense dedication and emotional investment. Seeing their joy and excitement grow with each passing week, especially now past viability, makes every early morning appointment, every blood test, and every moment of discomfort absolutely worth it. It’s a beautiful reminder of why I decided to be a surrogate in the first place: to help create a family.
