‘Premium pregnancy’, say whaaaaat? 🤔

I want genuine thoughts and feedback on this because I’m still flabbergasted weeks later, but in my birth-loving, evidenced based, patient advocate mind this is absolutely BONKERS 🤯

If elective induction is your jam (in surrogacy or ANY birth), you better believe I’m in your corner. But is that the right path for everyone just because baby was “expensive”?

Surrogates are premium👏 patients 👏. Yes, getting the baby here safely is of course THE priority but that doesn’t mean we can or should circumvent care options for the birthing person without any medical indication.

Someone take my soapbox before I keep going, sheesh 🫠

... Read moreThe term 'premium pregnancy' often surfaces in surrogacy conversations, especially when financial investments in an unborn child are significant. This concept implies that because of the high emotional and monetary stakes, some might advocate for more intervening care pathways such as elective induction to ensure delivery on a specific timeline. However, this mindset raises ethical questions and challenges the core principles of patient-centered and evidence-based maternity care. Surrogates, frequently categorized as "premium patients," undoubtedly carry a tremendous responsibility and face unique medical and emotional challenges during pregnancy. The priority remains the safe arrival of the baby, but this should never justify bypassing standard medical indications for interventions. Elective induction or other interventions intended solely to protect financial interests rather than medical necessity may not always align with best practices recommended by maternal-fetal medicine specialists. Current guidelines highlight that interventions in childbirth should primarily be based on medical indications to safeguard both the birthing person and the baby. Decisions purely driven by financial considerations can inadvertently increase risks, such as increased cesarean rates or neonatal complications. Surrogates deserve care that respects their autonomy, health, and well-being while also acknowledging the complexity of their role. Patient advocates emphasize the importance of informed consent and shared decision-making in surrogacy pregnancies. Rather than approaching care from a mindset that the pregnancy is 'premium' due to its financial aspect, medical teams should focus on evidence-based interventions tailored to individual medical needs. This approach ensures the surrogate’s health remains paramount while protecting the interests of the intended parents responsibly. In conclusion, the discussion around "premium pregnancy" should evolve into a broader conversation about balancing emotional, financial, and medical priorities without compromising care quality. Surrogates should not be perceived as cases where shortcuts or unnecessary interventions are applied but rather as patients deserving of respectful, informed, and evidence-driven maternity care. This approach fosters trust, safety, and positive outcomes for everyone involved in the extraordinary journey of surrogacy.
