Helper’s diary

... Read moreAs a domestic helper in Singapore, managing daily meals is a vital part of my routine. Often, the budget for food is limited, so planning and cooking simple, nutritious meals at home makes a big difference. I usually prepare affordable dishes like rice with vegetables and protein, which fuel my long working hours. Accommodation and food are essential considerations that many employers discuss with their helpers. In my experience, clear communication about food allowance and dietary preferences helps ensure that meals are both satisfying and budget-friendly. It’s also important to know how to utilize local ingredients creatively to maintain a healthy diet. Understanding the meaning and roles of a maid or helper helps build a respectful employer-helper relationship. My diary reflects a blend of personal stories and daily challenges, including managing finances, which sometimes involves understanding things like cheque number formats relevant back home, for example, in Sri Lanka. Sharing these insights and experiences isn’t just about meals; it’s about the life and dedication of foreign domestic helpers quietly supporting families while adapting to a new environment. Through honest reflections, I hope to help others see the human side behind the job title and appreciate the efforts made daily.
