It's Antler shedding season!

Antler shedding season truly is a magical time to explore the woods! While my last trip didn't yield any shed antlers, the adventure of being out in the snowy, wooded areas, surrounded by bare trees, was still incredibly rewarding. It got me thinking about all the amazing signs of wildlife we saw, and what I've learned about increasing your chances of finding those elusive treasures. First off, why do deer shed their antlers? It's a natural annual cycle, primarily driven by changing hormone levels, usually from late winter into early spring. Bucks no longer need their antlers for breeding season dominance, so their bodies reabsorb the calcium at the base, and off they pop! This makes late February through April generally the best time to start your search, but it can vary by region and deer health. So, where should you focus your hunt? Deer are creatures of habit, especially in winter. I always look for areas with good cover and food sources. Think about where deer might bed down to escape the cold – dense thickets, south-facing slopes that catch more sun, or even under gnarled branches forming natural shelters, just like some of the spots we noticed in the pictures! These bedding areas often show disturbed snow or exposed dark earth with clear impressions, along with tell-tale hoof prints in the dirt and surrounding snow. We saw so many signs of this on our last outing! Another prime location is around their feeding areas. If you know where deer are browsing on plants or visiting food plots, make sure to walk those trails. Also, consider their travel corridors – the paths they take between bedding and feeding spots. Look for any obstacles like fences or fallen logs; deer often jump over these, and the impact can sometimes dislodge a loose antler. It’s not just about the antlers themselves. Keep an eye out for other signs of deer activity. Fresh footprints in the snow are a huge indicator. Look for rub lines on trees where bucks have marked their territory, or scat. The more signs of deer you see, the closer you are to potential sheds. Patience is key! Walk slowly, scan ahead, and even use binoculars to spot antlers that might be partially covered by snow or leaves. Dressing warmly for the snowy conditions is a must, of course! Even when you don't find a shed, the experience itself is so fulfilling. There’s something incredibly peaceful about walking through a quiet, bare-treed forest, observing the subtle hints of nature. On my last trip, finding those deer beds and seeing so many footprints really brought the wilderness to life. It’s a connection to the wild, a treasure hunt where the journey is as good as the prize. So bundle up, grab a friend, and head out – you never know what you might discover!
