❌ An incident that has shocked Japan in recent days.
On December 15, a couple in their 30s d.i.e.d inside a private sauna room at the Sauna Tiger facility in Akasaka, Tokyo.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire broke out after a towel accidentally came into contact with hot stones in the sauna. When the facility’s smoke alarm was triggered, staff called the fire department. Firefighters forced the door open and found the two victims lying near the exit, with the husband appearing to shield his wife.
What has deeply disturbed the public is that the interior door handle was broken and had fallen off, preventing them from escaping. In addition, the emergency alarm button inside the room had been without power for two years and was not detected in time.
Notably, the facility had undergone a safety inspection in April 2023 and was reported as having “no major equipment deficiencies.” The incident raises serious questions about safety standards and the effectiveness of periodic inspections.

Many of us visit saunas to relax, but incidents like this serve as a serious reminder that safety should never be overlooked. I recently discovered that the emergency alarm button inside the sauna was out of power for two years, which is incredibly alarming. This breakdown in safety can have fatal consequences, as seen tragically in this case.
In my experience visiting various saunas, I always check for visible emergency equipment and alert staff if anything seems off or broken. Facilities must have rigorous maintenance and inspection routines beyond just annual checks, especially on critical safety devices like emergency alarms and exit handles.
It also highlights the importance of conducting surprise or more frequent safety inspections to ensure no equipment is neglected. Even seemingly small details, like a broken door handle, can turn deadly during emergencies if not addressed promptly.
This incident has made me more vigilant and proactive about safety when visiting any recreational facility. It’s crucial that operators not only meet safety regulations on paper but also ensure all emergency systems function effectively at all times. Our safety depends on it.
