hot take: i don’t tip ✨

here’s a list of services I don’t tip for:

•baristas. you made a cup of matcha, I’m not tipping you for that

•makeup artists. i already paid $300 for a service, and you want more?!

•photographers. Again, if I pay $2000 for a service, you expect a tip after that??

•hairstylists. I know someone is gonna comment “iF yOu DoNt hAvE mOnEy fOr a TiP tHeN dONt gEt tHe SeRviCe” and my response to that is, no. 🫢 I should be able to get my hair done without feeling like I HAVE to tip you.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard my hot take about not tipping for certain services. I know it's a stance that often sparks a lot of debate, and that's precisely what makes it a 'hot take,' right? It's an opinion that goes against the grain, challenges norms, and gets people talking. And honestly, I think it's important to discuss these things openly! Let's dive a bit deeper into why this particular opinion, and others like it, become such conversation starters. Tipping culture, especially here, is a really complex topic with deep roots. Historically, tips were meant to supplement low wages, but nowadays, it feels like the expectation has broadened immensely, sometimes without a clear understanding of why we're tipping. Take the coffee shop scenario, for instance. I've seen the espresso machine whirring and the baristas crafting drinks, and while I appreciate the skill, it often feels like a quick transaction. When I'm grabbing my usual latte, the prompt to add a tip can feel automatic, but I sometimes wonder if it truly reflects extra effort or just a standard part of the job I'm already paying for. It's a different feeling than, say, a server who has provided an extended, personalized dining experience. Then there are those services where the cost itself is already substantial. I mentioned makeup artists, photographers, and hairstylists. When I'm dropping hundreds, or even thousands, on a service, the idea of adding another 15-20% on top can be a real point of contention. Is that tip factored into their pricing structure already? Or is it an additional, often unspoken, expectation? For me, if a service is priced at $300 or $2000, that price should reflect the full value and expertise, including fair compensation for the professional. It makes me question if the industry standard for pricing covers what it should. This whole discussion about tipping isn't just about being thrifty; it's about transparency and fairness. Many people argue that employers should be responsible for paying a living wage, not relying on customer tips to make up the difference. Others feel that tipping is a personal way to show appreciation for exceptional service. Both sides have valid points, and that's exactly what makes it a perfect 'hot take' topic – there's no single right answer, and everyone has their own experience and perspective. If you're looking for your own 'hot take ideas,' just think about things that annoy you, things you see people doing mindlessly, or societal norms that you question. It could be anything from why pineapple does belong on pizza, to why working 9-5 is outdated, or even why certain fashion trends make no sense. The key is to have a strong, well-reasoned (even if unpopular) opinion. Don't be afraid to voice it – you might just spark a great conversation, just like my 'I don't tip' stance often does!

Hey totally get what you mean tipping culture is out of control but if you buy from black owned or other poc I’d encourage tipping bc sometimes they need to pay more for their products

Stop Buying Takeout Make These Crab Rangoon Eggrolls Instead
These crab rangoon eggrolls are everything you want in one bite. Crispy on the outside, creamy and packed with flavor on the inside. The mozzarella adds that extra melt and the chili flakes give just enough kick. I kept turning them while frying so they came out evenly golden all the way around.
