Protecting my strawberries from the squirrels* 🍓🐿️
As someone who has nurtured a backyard strawberry patch for several seasons, protecting the fruit from squirrels is always a challenge. Squirrels are naturally drawn to sweet strawberries, making it crucial to implement strategies that keep them at bay without harming them. One method that worked well for me is creating physical barriers. Installing a lightweight wire mesh or netting around the strawberry plants effectively prevents squirrels from reaching the berries. It’s important to ensure the mesh is secured tightly to the ground to stop them from squeezing underneath. Another tip is to use natural deterrents. Sprinkling cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes around the garden perimeter keeps squirrels away, as they dislike the spicy scent and taste. Reapplying these deterrents after rain can maintain their effectiveness. In addition, providing an alternative food source, such as a squirrel feeder stocked with nuts placed away from the garden, can redirect their attention from your strawberries. Maintaining your garden by removing fallen fruits or ripe berries promptly can also reduce attraction. Consistent care not only protects the strawberries but also promotes healthier plant growth. Overall, balancing gentle deterrents and physical protections allows you to enjoy fresh strawberries while coexisting peacefully with local wildlife in your garden.
